Seems it appears several ways on the internet. But I reference their own website: http://www.brainwashed.com/godspeed/news.html
They express it as: Godspeed You! Black Emporer.

The name is "Godspeed You! Black Emperor", named after a 1976 Japanese documentary film about a motorcycle gang called The Black Emperors:

The first three albums they were "Godspeed You Black Emperor!"
They changed it on the fourth to "Godspeed You! Black Emperor."
I prefer the original as the second is pretentious nonsense, so I'll always say GYBE! just because I'm used to it, having jumped on board on the second album.
But overall, since they don't exist anymore, I guess it's academic.

Thanks for the informative replies .. normally I can google with reasonable style .. my excuse was I was busy at the time ... and I recall a degree of debate over this topic from times gone by...

Whilst this is true from the PoV of new material.
From the PoV of the library we have:
GYBE! - Tiny Silver Hammers [ep]
G!YBE for the rest.
I perused Amazon without a quick result (they use GYBE! for everything).
If someone "in the know" care to list the titles and names I will change the songlist...
Actually, I'd be delighted if we could agree to call 'em one name ... having different names for essentially the same entity unbalances "the system"
(just a minor grumble... no biggie)
P.S. Lotus, contact me off-list for a price to delete the entire band catalogue..

Now that I think about it..... I don't care what they're called as long as they're not called to the playlist. :surrender

Well, for the record, the only time I ever hear them anymore is when they play on AM. I haven't played their albums in years. If they released a new one, I'd buy it, play it a lot, then it'd probably sit there. They make amazingly beautiful music, very interesting and non-boring music, but it doesn't have hooks or bits that make you want to revisit the album five years later. Better stated, you don't think, "Man, I need to pull out their albums again!" They just don't settle in your mind like that. However, on the occasions when I listen to "Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven," easily their best album, I have a reaction like, "Man, this is so stinking good! Why don't I listen to this more often?"
The tracks "Storm," "Static," "Sleep," and "Moya" are recommended starting points for the reader who knows no Godspeed You Black Emperor!
