There's a post-rock/prog-rock band of the Tortoise-ilk called Questions in Dialect, or QiD. They're pretty darned good. Here's a tease for you all. On their website, click "Information" and at the bottom you can stream two songs, "Paper Tigers" and "Walking on Water." Great stuff. They're friends of mine, so I have read a lot of the reviews. They get compared frequently to Tortoise, Unwed Sailor, Early Day Miners, Sigur Ros, and Ester Drang. They opened for Unwed Sailor, in fact.

Questions in Dialect (http://www.questionsindialect.com/)

To quote one reviewer, "If asked to compare Questions in Dialect to other bands, I would probably say that their sound rests somewhere between Sigur Ros and Unwed Sailor, but honestly they sound a good bit different than either of those bands."

Another: "Questions in Dialect is essentially a musical experience that rests somewhere between Unwed Sailor and Ester Drang. Fans of Sigur Ros should be happy here as well."

etc....

QiD are bass, drums, guitar, guitar, and then throw in violin, cello, and dulcimer, amongst other things....

Didn't want to turn people off with the GYBE reference Spaz? ;) It is definately there which I consider a positive. I'll be picking it up and give your friends my compliments.

The only thing that I can think of that would compare them with GYBE! is that they drape a huge blank, white sheet behind the stage and run art films on it while they play, which the guitarist makes (the guitarist was a film student and makes documentaries for a living), which GYBE! also does. And many reviewers say stupid things like, "Oh, they have a guy who puts down his guitar and plays cello or violin; they must be influenced by Godspeed." Like GYBE! was the first or last band to use live strings. I guess there are a few songs that sound Godspeedish, but I have to go with the majority of reviewers and drop names like Early Day Miners, vocal-less Sigur Ros, and Unwed Sailor.

Glad you liked the mp3s and are buying the album.

That's your story and you're stickiing to it. ;) We'll let the others who have listened to the samples give their impressions.

Heh, just found out that due to Questions in Dialect touring with Unwed Sailor, the guitarist for QiD will guest on the new Unwed album. He's a "member for one album" and will be touring Europe with them. I'll post dates for you folks (BBQ, KW, etc.).
