View Full Version : R.I.P. bob moog
:( bob moog died sunday from complications of a brain tumor.
it would be impossible to overstate his importance
to modern music making, and prog in particular.
we've lost a giant. he'll be missed.

I'd been watching his site for the past month for word of his passing. The prognosis for him ever recovering was slim, so I knew the end was inevitable.
It's very sad but he left an indelible mark in the history of music.

Without Bob Moog the music we love so much would be very different indeed.
R.I.P. Mr Moog.

...but, the sound of those square waves in "Lucky Man" does "speak" to the wonderful contributions Moog made.
I remember being quite a "pest" as a teenager hanging out at the music store in the 70s, where they had a MiniMoog for sale that you could twiddle on with the headphones! I was "flying blind" at the time, as it was probably the first synth I laid my hands on (until that same store got an Arp Oddysey in!!) It wasn't so easy to make sounds on it as I thought it might be, but I really didn't know what I was doing.
I also had the good fortune to know a guy who worked at the campus sports arena where ELP played their BSS tour. He hauled me up onto the stage during the teardown, where I got a "player's view" of Keith's Moog rig (which, only minutes earlier had sprouted small wings, and blew fireworks out it top for the finale!). It was a WALL of components, each full of knobs, jacks, and wires. I nearly knelt!

indeed the Sound of a Music Genre is laid to rest....we are all so much the better for his time on the planet, his contribution echoes in the universe and our hearts.
eternal peace

I can't honestly think of a single person who's had as much a profound influence on world music since the day that Stratavarius first put his tools to wood.
Without him, we'd be in the dark ages, listening to glub knows what.
He'll very much be missed.
