1. Discipline - King Crimson (same as Ginjeet!)

3. Unfolded Like Staircase - Discipline
4. The Devouring - Djam Karet

1. Discipline - King Crimson (same as Ginjeet!)
I do think it's good.
The fact is..
no matter how closely I study it,
no matter how I take it apart,
no matter how I break it down,
It remains consistent.

Not razzing on spaz but...

This kind of question is fun if you're playing, and it's good to see new people post in the forums. It's also a question that's not going to go away, as folks discover the Moon.

People who have played before can either take a jab at it again, or go and do stuff that makes them happy. Lots of choice. :yougo

Don't worry Pelo, people are enjoying the thread. :)

As for me, I can't really give a top 5; for some odd reasons every prog album I know gets tied for 1st position when I think about it. I can't really decide.

Couldn't have said it better myself mossy.

As for my top 5. At this moment in time it is:

1) Tales from topographic oceans - Yes
2) Dark side of the moon - Pink floyd
3) Selling England by the pound - Genesis
4) Pink Moon - Nick Drake (If Leo Kottke is on the Moon then so should Nick be!)
5) Earthbound - King Crimson

Like I said Pelo, you post whatever and whenever you want. It's great to see so many new members on the Moon.

This kind of question is fun if you're playing, and it's good to see new people post in the forums. It's also a question that's not going to go away, as folks discover the Moon. I know it's not going away. I just wish that when new folks come to a place they'd search the boards for a while before posting. If I join a new community, I don't post something the first day. Most boards even have a sticky thread that reads something like "READ THIS FIRST" or "THESE TOPICS ALREADY HAVE FIVE THREADS."

i posted this thread cause im newSee above.
Seriously, I'm glad you're here and look forward to getting to know you. I'm not a jerk. Really.

5) Sui Generis - Pequeñas anécdotas sobre las instituciones (not in the moon)*

* can i donate a copy??? i dont want to loose my album.. was difficult to getSure. Here's what you can do. Rip the cd to mp3 at 192kps. Get all the tags perfect - artist, song title, album title, and year - on each track. Use IDv3 tags. Then bundle the whole thing together as one file. Then use www.yousendit.com to send the whole thing to ProgDirJim. You can PM him to get his email address. Finally, be patient. Jim's always got a TON of music to listen to. And be aware that it's not guaranteed it'll get added. Jim is the music director and owner and he decides what is or is not added.

I agree this kind of question is not very usefull :boxing: , are the others so?

Just for the record and according to my instant inspiration and feeling

Golden age

1. Selling England by the £ By Genesis
2. Pawn Hearts by VDGG
3. Red by King Crimson
4. Isola di niente by PFM
5. Close to the edge by Yes

Today's prog ( so they say , the adjective progressive applied to rock did not exist during the Golden age , some papers named it ' Head rock' in western Europe ( minus UK:rofl: )

1. Il trono dei recordi eponym
2. Brave by Marillion
3. Ever by Iq
4. Flower Power By TFK
5. Il grande labyrintho LA maschera di cera

some thoughts:

Pelo, I didn't think of adding the music that way, good idea Spaz. But Jim has your email to me also.

Spaz, I don't access Progressive Ears because of the sheer voluminosity (fake word, Webster is choking on a adjective there) of the posts. I don't think new members need to search the boards. This forum isn't the easiest to find stuff. I can't even find my old shows if I didn't have them written down. Got a Kx record in there :)

What I would like to see is some basic info on the new members. Pelo has some background but a lot of new members just out their name in.

And mail you cheated and did a top 10:haha: I have to do a top 100 thread...

Sorry meth, spaz, I don't agree. this is a forum, full of free flowing thoughts, not a ranking, etc. Stickys should be used to keep important announcements at the top, not to rank threads.

Sometimes a thread seems worthwhile and no one hits it. Other times it's goofy and everyone does.

Seems to me people like it. Who cares that it gets recycled every so often?

To R'n'R and artboy:

I've got no particular problem with this thread or these polls in general. It is just that with over 2500 threads and close to 20000 posts, it might be beneficial to offer a little guidance, other than just the keyword-based search mechanism, for those who're trying to find something specific from the archives.

Not that this is awfully important to me. Whatever eventually keeps the Moon best on its orbit... that's the way to go, I suppose.

... seems like a good time for my first post...

1. Selling England by the Pound - Genesis,
2. Silent cries and mighty echoes - Eloy,
3. Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd,
4. Lark's Tongues in Aspic - King Crimson,
5. Time is the key - Gong (Pierre Moerlen's Gong),

My choices are somewhat seasonal. Although the previous list represents my gold standards, I am at times (particularly during Fall) very partial to Wind & Wuthering, by Genesis, to One Size Fits All by Zappa, and to Tales from the Lush Attic, by IQ.

Kenso - Fabulis Mirabilibus De Bombycosi Scriptis
Gryphon - Raindance
Gentle Giant - In a Glass House
Porcupine Tree - Stupid Dream
King Crimson - Starless and Bible Black

It's actually really hard to choose just 5 albums.

I think there is truth to the idea of favorites coming out of a particular time in one's life...couldn't stop playing the following when I was young (of course I couldn't afford a wide variety at the time).

1. Relayer - Yes (played this over and over for years)
2. Tubular Bells - Mike Oldfield (played this, and then the Allman Brothers, and then Jimi Hendryx, then repeated for a whole summer)
3. Thick as a Brick - Jethro Tull (what can I say?)
4. Tales of Mystery and Imagination - Alan Parsons (truly classical)
5. Countdown to Ecstasy - Steely Dan (OK, perhaps not prog, but progressive...)

We tend to identify with the music and its messages, its (counter) culture--so it becomes 'favorite'. I lost track of good music in the wasteland they called radio in the ensuing two decades --remember disco? Plus, I was way too busy working for a living...
Then in the nineties I was happy to discover prog alive and kicking by both 'seasoned' and new! Such as:
1. Subterranea - IQ
2. Hubris - Anglagard
3. Second Life Syndrome - Riverside
4. Alone - Clepsydra
5. Thrak - King Crimson

An excellent selection of songs. Excellent performances.

3) Peter Hammill - Silent Corner and the Empty Stage
On some days, this could be #1.

4) Echolyn - As the World
I played this CD in my car for close to 6 months at one point.

5) Djam Karet - Burning the Hard City
Have to love the jams.

What I found interesting is that the most critically acclaimed albums by Genesis and Pink Floyd are apparently not the favorites of Moon listeners. After all, Dark Side of the Moon is considered the best Pink Floyd album by most critics I've seen, but Moon listeners who picked a Floyd album overwhelmingly favored Wish You Were Here.

With Genesis, Lamb Lies Down has always been considered their best album (critically speaking) but most of the Moon listeners identified Selling England by the Pound as their favorite Genesis album (it's mine, too).

I wonder if anyone has any thoughts on why there's such a difference?

TOP 5/ Original Old Style Prog:
1. YES- Close to the Edge remaster ed.
[actually a tie with their Tales From Topographic Oceans remaster ed.]
2. Genesis- Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
3. King Crimson- In The Court of the Crimson King
4. Nektar- Remember the Future
5. Caravan- In the Land of Grey and Pink

and if I fall through a door into an alternate universe
somewhere these may be the top 5...
6. ELP- Tarkus
7. Renaissance - Ashes are Burning
8. Hawkwind- Hall of the Mountain Grill
9. Camel- Moonmadness
10. Mahavishnu Orchestra- The Inner Mounting Flame

TOP 5/ New Prog Revival:
1. Marillion- Script for a Jester's Tear [tied with Fugazi] remaster eds.
2. Ozric Tentacles- Strangitude
3. IQ- Dark Matter
4. Aryeon- Electric Castle
5. Colin Masson- Isle of Eight

lamour......I like your choices :vaxman:

Thor that's 15! You cheat!

Anyway, lol, Grey and Pink is a true classic. A great choice.

And you will hear the "Electric Castle" in its entirety this week on my show!

Beo, I'm not a die hard Floyd fan, Maybe that's why I like "Animals" the best. It gets into it and never lets up. "Wish You Were Here" is a perfectly constructed record. Maybe "Dark Side" is just overexposed - it was for me.

I never thought of the Lamb as their best work. I, for one, am ecstatic that I differ from what is critically acclaimed.:boxing: That being said, Lamia, Cage, Scree, Anyway, 32 Doors - all five some of their best songs. But I like Nursery Cryme and Trespass a bit better than the Lamb as a whole. Some of the songs like Lifeless Packaging and Back in NYC really annoy me.

"Selling England" to me is their masterwork.

I see DSOTM as PF's gateway album, a great introduction to their music, but a bit thin on content.(It's still a great album, of course). My favorite Floyd is a three way first place tie between Animals/Atom Heart Mother/Meddle.

I personnally do not like LLDOB, and prefer much more Nursery/Selling. The lamb is too unfocused and tries to push too much song ideas on too much albums (all my opinion again).

As for why people do not prefer these critics' favorite, it's probably a subject of great debate. I don't like The lamb because of reasons stated above and then some more. However, I also have a pathological repulsion against enormous mainstream success, and I can't explain why. This is probably why I don't think of Dark Side as the definitive Pink Floyd album. And, yes, I know it's dumb. I don't think we could get a homogenous answer from the community as to why these get pushed down the top 5.

And you will hear the "Electric Castle" in its entirety this week on my show!

And for the record, I love DSOTM. I can understand ANY objections to it because of the overplayed factor, but it's a great album. Perhaps the best understated prog album ever. Genesis, my fave is probably Foxtrot, but I can see Nursery Cryme and Selling England easily. Trespass is great, a bit more raw but worthwhile. Yes I have to stick with Close To The Edge. Tales is far too bloated before anyone suggests it ;-)

Whoa, Passion and Warfare. I get a hangover everytime I hear it, it's one big guitar lead. I'd submit it for upload to the Moon, but I find it just outside the paramaters that I think Jim would set. It certainly is one of my favorite heavy CD's, along with Satch's "Surfing With the Alien". Stu Hamm on both ...connection here! And "Sisters" is such a nice song.

Whoa, Passion and Warfare... it's one big guitar lead. Ever hear Zappa's "Shut Up and Play Yer Guitar"? I think it's guitar solos from live tracks edited together. Now that's crazy.

There's at least three of them (Son of, Return of, etc). I remember a hilarious song called something like "The Secret Carlos Santana Chord Progression"

Thanks for comments to my comment. As I said, compared to many of you, I am a mere prog neophyte, but I would list my favorites as follows (in no particular order)

1. Genesis, Selling England by the Pound
2. King Crimson, Discipline
3. Adrian Belew, Desire of the Rhino King
4. Peter Gabriel, Secret World Live
5. Pink Floyd, Wish You Were Here

My top 5 for the current moment is:

Pendragon - Not of This World
Mostly Autumn - The Spirit of Autumn Past
IQ - Subterranea: The Concert
Opeth - Damnation
Marillion - Script For A Jester's Tear

I cannot name my favourite albums unless the list goes endless, and even then, I cannot say which one I put first, so I guess this is useless ...

It is Beer Klaas, of the great Dutch band "Finch". His name is Beer, he's half-naked, and he's having a good time. I saw that picture and thought, what the hell...

Just wanted to know if any of the other 70 people in the entire world who bought the Dr. Z album "Three Parts to My Soul" is on this board? For all that matters, if ANYONE out there has heard of them? Sadly, I gave away my album when I moved. Ca. 1971, 3 guys - drums, bass & ....harpsichord. Pretty good, actually. Although it's probably only nostalgia that's talking.

Yeah. I've heard about the re-issue, apparently including the original fold-out cover. I'm pretty sure that's the main reason I bought it in the first place. Pretty original stuff, kind of 'Occult -Lite'. The guy could really play that harpsichord, which I usually rank up there in the useless-musical intruments-category together with steel guitar & bag pipes.

No we're not. In another thread it was told that we have plenty. And I suggested to delete the posts that were prior to an agreed upon date. So there's no issue with that.

Nonsense? Letting people have fun? Giving them an outlet for their views? If you say so. As Echolyn quotes from Willie Wonka, "A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men".

Is it any wonder anymore why the forums are not as engaging as they used to be?

Go put your stick back in the mud.

If I like it I'll buy it. The thing here I'm suggesting isn't piracy. It's exposure. Getting a copy on the Moon can only help this new prog band. We're a community. What's the difference if Jim owns it or I own it or Taril owns it? Taril adding it to the Moon and Jim adding to the Moon wash out to be the same thing; Jim's just the gatekeeper.

To be technical, this whole site could be construed as a copyright issue.

Way to go. While we're at it, let's just call ASCAP :shootmeno

Look, I just got two nice CD's from a band named Auroris. I'll be uploading them to the Moon sometime soon enough. And I will play them on my show. If I just played them on my show, all I need to do is own it myself. But if it's on the Moon, the station must own it. If I own something and upload it, it's considered to be on the station. The way I understand it, Jim needs an actual disc in case an audit is done. I can have a disc and as long as I am "working" for the station, it should be ok for me to own it.

So that's why we should wait on this one, especially since it's popular. How about we don't open a can of worms?

And I may be wrong, but even if Tony from Auroris says to play his CD (and he will, and is happy for the exposure), that doesn't necessarily mean we're allowed to play it. We have to have a copy.

talk about timing, check this out:

Pure Reason Revolution's management has just given us permission via
Sony/BMG to post to full-length MP3s to the NEARfest website.

Go http://www.nearfest.com/event/lineup.asp and click on "MP3"
underneath the PRR entry to download the following tracks:

- "The Intention Craft" (6:23)
- "Nimos & Tambos" (3:44)

Both tracks are from the album "The Dark Third" (US version).

Enjoy!

- Chad

I think the band is exposing itself nicely dare I say.

I may listen myself.

The thing here I'm suggesting isn't piracy. It's exposure.

I know what you mean, spaz but the thing is, it should be the artist's call whether or not they would like each individual to pay for the physical CD, or whether or not they want exposure by allowing someone other than themselves to "distribute" their music virtually, without the purchase of more CD's.

And my understanding of Jim's stand on this is that he wants original CD's if someone is willing to donate music to the station, unless the artist gives permission otherwise.

To me this is only prudent. Otherwise it would be opening the situation up to all kinds of nebulous interpretation, however well intended the gift.

And I'm speaking from the point of view of a listener wanting to donate music, I don't know enough about shows to comment on that.

I'm downloading the longer one now (slow on dial-up), but the thing I found interesting is this: SPACE/POST ROCK. Yep, they're described as SPACE/POST ROCK. Isn't that the best way to describe Godspeed, Mogwai, and Tarentel? I think so. But these are short songs and by the picture I doubt they sound anything like those bands. This should be interesting.

The other early albums are good too, but beware of "Forget the Colours"! It's the most complex and dark prog metal album I've ever heard; it sure lives up to the title. Almost unlistenable IMO.

The sound on "Path of Dreams" is much warmer and more normal, albeit ambitious, prog. I especially love the way they can play long instrumental passages without ever getting boring and repetetive. A true gem. Check this album out if you can find it!
