I know we've done several versions of "best" or "favorite", how about the negative and cynical point of view? Who's the worst prog drummer? For the purposes of this thread, we'll define prog as "music on Aural Moon".

I nominate Bev Bevan of ELO - I could play any of his drum parts in a drunken coma with one arm amputated.

Honorable mention to Graeme Edge of the Moody Blues...

1. Anyone who says Alan White and then goes on a "Bill Bruford forever" spiel doesn't know anything about drumming. Bruford is great, yes, but so is White. Who's a better guitarist, Wes Montgomery or Chet Atkins? Exactly, you can't compare them because they're different styles.

Listen to Alan's drumming on Tales, Relayer, Tormato, Drama, and Talk and drop your jaw. Ok, so he wasn't amazing on 90125 or Generator, but neither was Squire - it's a style thing.

2. Um, of the bigger bands, I'd have to say Nick Mason. He's got skill, but he's not even in the same league as the drummers from Yes, Tull, Crim, Rush, etc. Maybe Rutsey:haha:

KW's being ironic. Damon Che is phenomenally talented, fluid, and phenomenally talented. He's also phenomenally talented.

There isn't such thing because they wouldn’t be prog at all. Let’s say PUNK! You know what I mean. LOL

The drummer who played with Carptree at last year's ROSfest gets my vote for the very worst drummer.

I'd be tempted to say the worst prog drummer is the current drummer for the Flower Kings. I consider him a "nobody".

Worst Prog rock drummer has to go to Vangelis... though he claims to be a master of all sorts of instruments and credits himself for playing them on his albums, drumming is not one of his fortes. There is a funny story about when he tried out for YES. Chris Squire and Alan white sat there with their jaws on the floor and watched while Vangelis said he could play each of their parts if need be. "He was banging and crashing about like a damn ape"... said Squire, they quickly dismissed him with an... "It's all Greek to me" comment. :D

The "worst" polls aren't my thing, but I'm glad Thor brought that point up. The worst drumming is when the jack of all trades artist decides he or she wants to bang the drums.

The only two people I've known to do it well is Adrian Belew and Carl Groves (if there are more, please tell me). Even Matthew Parmenter, as much as I love his work, is guilty of dabbling in the drumming. A song is enhanced or destroyed greatly by the drumming.

We just got a drum kit for our 11 year old. Figure in a week he'd be past Nick Mason (cheap shot!)

Best name in drums still goes to Finch's Beer Klaas.

What defines "worst"? Can't keep time? Unimaginative? Pedestrian? Or plants too many daisies? Neil Peart plants daisies all over the garden, but he knows how to do it in such a way that you just sit back and enjoy...everything he does fits. Saw them at the NEC this past Friday for the first time (been a fan since 1977 - shame on me!!!). It's just a shame that on middle-era Rush albums (between Power Windows and Roll the Bones) drumming was buried in the mix somewhat.

Manny Elias is one of the drummers that Peter Hammill uses on solo efforts. He is often called "Manny the Metronome" by Hammill fans, and this is generally not considered to be a compliment...

John Mayhew (Trespass) or Chris Stewart/John Silver (Gen to Rev)?

And speaking of Genesis, Mike Rutherford used to play drums during some of there live shows. He wasn't too bad, but...:bang!:

And then there's Peter Gabriel. He wanted to be the drummer for Genesis since the beginning. He can keep time and even played during the 'Save Peter because he's bankrupt' tour in the late 70's. But, that being said, he can pretty much play any other instrument you can name.8-q

He was on the early Tears For Fears albums.

Perhaps the Hammill fans should stop worry about the drumming and ask Peter Hammill why he sings like he's yelling at kids to get off of his property...:neener:

That's because he is...

He's also trying to weed out all of the cloth-eared nincompoops and fans of pretty singalong music. Clearly it's working...

I wish I could say I was being original...I first saw this in the liner notes to Mike Oldfield's Amarok - his best album imho.
