View Full Version : Moon website needs replacement equipment

One of VAX's UPSs (uninterruptable power supplies) suffered a meltdown today and needs to be replaced. He cleaned up the mess it made, but I don't think he should have to pay for the replacement even though he's probably willing to. So I'm asking Moonies to cough up a bit o' change during this holiday season to replace it, in other words this is a call for support for your favorite web stream/site. The price is not very high. Just a few of us could fix this with a $5 donation or whatever. VAX please tell us where we can send donations, the link you gave me in chat didn't work for a donation (I probably didn't understand what you meant, my bad). Thanks for keeping the Moon in orbit VAX you rock!

OK, I figured out what VAX meant, if you wish to donate via paypal to the UPS replacement fund, go to
https://www.paypal.com
Click the "Send Money" tab at the top. In the To: field, enter:
"VAXman@tmesis.com"
then enter the amount you'd like to donate in the Amount: field and select "U.S. Dollars" in the Currency: field and select "Service/Other" in the For: field. Then click Continue and enter your billing info. I just sent him a donation and it worked.

I know that are many that will also be willing to donate, but do we have an idea as to the goal of our fundraising effort.
And while we're at it, and in the giving mode, are there other units of equipment that need upgrading to better serve the moon?
I think I'll send VAX a check directlly, I'm more comfortable with that

I think the goal is around $200 for a replacement UPS, tho how we'll track that I do not know, nor do I care really personally, but that's a good point Dale. I'll let VAX respond if he chooses to, I just didn't want him paying for it if he could avoid it, especially during the holiday season, he already pays quite a bit to keep the Moon website up and if a piece of gear goes down I'd like to think we'll chip in to get another that's all. But I do understand your point, "hey let's all give VAX money!" lol. You've already donated enough CDs Dale ;).
This is not an auralmoon.com authorized donation campaign, I just suggested that VAX should not have to pay for this replacement and he said if ya wanna pass the hat, here's where to send it. There is absolutely no requirement that anybody send anything, I just thought it would be nice to replace VAX's UPS that's all. If it's a poorly thought out fund raising campaign it's all my fault, but I do not have access to the homepage or VAX's paypal account, if he ends up with extra money, OK in my book, he's due IMHO, but you are correct to bring that up. Please do not donate anybody that isn't willing to do so, there is absolutely no need for you to do so.

That's perfectly fine GORT, VAX did not ask for this. I just did it on my own so all blame for its lameness is mine, thanks for helping him out.

When I took over the web hosting of Aural Moon, supplying it its server and its bandwidth, I did so expecting nothing in terms of any monetary compensation. The warm and fuzzy feeling because I was helping a great prog community to stay connected and remain the great prog community that it is was compensation enough. You have all proven to me, with your contributions, that I made a sage commitment.
To all of you who have contributed to date, :vaxman: "Cheers and thank you!"

L8r,

Thanks Ted and thanks again to everybody else who has contributed.
I thought I'd share a photo with you. This is a picture of the two cells that I pulled from the UPS. I hope you can see how they swelled under the load of the power outage. They were old and this can happen. It was very difficult to get them out of the UPS because the swelled so badly. The set on the right was damaged by me trying to pry beneath the cell to get it out. The smear on the side is from the acid gel that leaked out when I cracked the casing in the removal procedure.

I have ordered new batteries and they are scheduled for delivery on Tuesday. I had them sent UPS ground which was the cheapest shipping method. These batteries are very heavy (61LBS shipping weight) so ground was the cheapest method and that was still in excess of $40.
Next Tuesday there should be 48V@19AH delivered. I will schedule a brief downtime Wednesday (assuming they arrive Tuesday) to install them into the UPS.
I will then get to the replacement of the external cell's batteries.
VAX,
Thanks for the update and the photos... WOW... it is amazing that they can swell that much...
Yeah for contributors to the Moon... and for your diligence in taking care of things...
It is wonderful to be a part of this community.
Regards,
Ted
