Samurai was not really the first band of Dave Lawson. His first band (The) Web made in 1970 one album "I spider" with lots of jazz/rock/soul influences in mostly long compostitions. Think also : Solution, Hatfield & The North, Van Der Graaf Generator, Soft Machine and King Crimson.
Samurai was more kinda like early Steely Dan with shorter songs.
