Apparently, this article has gone viral. It is very well-written and thought provoking. As lovers of music, we should all want fair compensation for the artists we love.

Interesting. Some loose notes:
In most cases the quality of the MP3 you get out of the internets is lower than what you get from a CD;
Many titles are not available for sale at any price;
A price tag of 40 € for a good prog-rock CD is not unusual;
Professional musicians I know get less than 1 € / per record sold, even those that sell over 10 000 copies per LP;
The quality of the music proped up by the media today is below the minimum treshold to appeal to an average human;
More than half of the CD I buy were recorded before I was born.
And finally: no internet download if free. All internet traffic implies a cash flow to an internet provider company.

The story of the 2 guys from "Sparklehorse" is very sad. I never heard of them. Do you have any links where I can hear them for free? 8-o .

Finally got to read this. Thanks for posting it, MM. There are probably no more than a dozen prog artists making a decent living at it today, probably in part because of free downloads.
