I did a perfunctory search but didn't find PFM (Premiata Forneria Marconi), the Italian prog rock outfit responsible for "Photos of Ghosts" (notably the song "Celebration"). Forgive me if it's already around here.

Another band that I remember listening to may not have been progressive, but it was good: Skin Alley, notably their album "Two Quid Deal."

Other bands that may not be here: Quintessence (I only have a hazy memory of this group, but I remember they were good) Starcastle (the Yes ripoff band, but it's my recollection that they were pretty good on their own) Quiver (before the Sutherland Brothers) and maybe some Frank Marino (ex-Mahogany Rush--an album Juggernaut comes to mind.) Camel and Anthony Phillips would also be nice.

Sorry if this stuff is already up here. Just tuned in tonight, and a combo of early Focus added to Tribal Tech has made me an addicted follower of this station. I grew up on Montreal's CHOM FM, the "original" album rock station.

Almost forgot one of my favorites! And please don't just do their tired "Hold Your Head Up." There was so much better stuff.

PFM (Premiata Forneria Marconi) - There's LOADS of PFM here on the station. Search under the full name and not PFM and you'll find it.

Quintessence (I only have a hazy memory of this group, but I remember they were good) - I think ALL fans of Quintessence have a hazy memory of most things. They were excellent. I particularly enjoy "Dive Deep" and listen to it often.

Starcastle (the Yes ripoff band, but it's my recollection that they were pretty good on their own) - They're featured here on AM and they're songs are often played.

Quiver (before the Sutherland Brothers) and maybe some Frank Marino (ex-Mahogany Rush--an album Juggernaut comes to mind.) Camel and Anthony Phillips would also be nice. - Tons of Camel here and quite rightly so.

As for Argent. We're working on progdirjim for that one. LOL!!!

Avian and progdirjim DO look after us and more stuff is added to the playlist on a regular basis.

Hope you post often to the forum.

:D

interesting about the Frank Marino - although I'm not a big fan of his, I love that type of 70's rock that never made it big - Budgie, Manfred Mann, Montrose, etc.

I'm not sure if that fits into the AM mode, but like Keith says about Argent, it's a work in progress.

I'm glad you like what you heard. Try to "focus" (sorry, one of my puns) on some newer or obscure music you may hear, and by all means, watch you wallet! (ask Keith about that one).

Welcome aboard.

Great. It's nice to find a hopping forum, for once.

Already I've heard some stuff I would have been nuts about had I known it existed. Finch, for example. Why did I never hear of them? They were right up my alley.

Just wondering if anyone around here has ever heard Abraxas Pool (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&uid=CASS70308261701&sql=A6ansa93gu23a) and if they are any good. And, I suppose, if they fit in here!

I was a huge fan of early Journey and saw them many times, usually on the same bill with Santana. You can't go wrong with Gregg Rolie, and with Neal Schon and Michael Shrieve, it should sound pretty good.

Of course, poor old Neal was an item in the 50 worst guitar solos of all time . . . (http://pitchforkmedia.com/top/solos/)

This is the first and last time I will use them in the same sentence!

In my college days, I was exposed to a lot of neat stuff I missed growing up in the 70's. I was (and still am) the Tull, Rush, Sabbath fan (you know the drill). Finch was a Norwegian band that put out only a handful of great records in the late 70's. They're one of the bands I caught onto then. I think listening to Crimson and Gentle Giant really opened a lot of doors.

It's an absolute scream that the bass player's first name for Finch is "Beer".

It appears that you will find a kindred spirit in Yesspaz, who also is HUGE Journey fan.

Heh . . . yup, many a night was spent with Purple Microdot (one of my friends at the time) listening to "Kohoutek."

(On another subject completely--Jean-Luc Ponty is now playing. I once played racquetball with Joaquin Lievano, a onetime guitarist for J-LP and am happy to say I kicked his little ass. However, when I saw him perform with his band at a local venue, I wanted to KISS his ass).

BTW, there's a bio (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&uid=CASS70308261701&sql=B6kqag4attv3z) of Finch on that excellent resource, Allmusic.com.

Uh-oh, I've already spent half an hour of my day here and I fear it will only get worse.:D

I think Yesspazz and I will get along famously.

checked out the bio - yes, very overlooked - I don't know why I said Norway - they're Dutch - slip of the finger.

Was Jamie Glaser with Ponty too when you saw him? Between them and Rayford griffin on drums, that was a live band to die for.

I never saw J-L P, just Joaquin Lievano's band. And I think Alphonso Johnson was the bass player when Joaquin was with J-L P, but I could be wrong. I think Daryl Stuermer put in a spell with J-L P for a while, till joining . . . Genesis? Could that be right?

After playing Joaquin at racquetball we chatted about the world of fusion. He said Larry Coryell was a hopeless drunk. I found that hilarious.

Joaquin now does that space-age pap you hear these days. But he was a brilliant guitarist when I saw him!

Him and Goodsall would make a great pair.

Neat stories.

John Goodsall of Brand X? A drinker, eh? Tell me more! He was a damn good guitar player . . .

a little more than that. I saw him at a show at a very small club in Baltimore about 5 years ago with Brand X (him, Percy, Wagnon, and Katz). They played Nuclear Burn twice (the only old song he remembered), and the first 45 seconds of Cambodia. he was s***-faced. Saw him at Orion Studios twice after that, and then guesting on two songs with Tunnels at Nearfest.

Makes me wish I saw all those great bands in the 70's in their prime.

Some were really bad solos, but I think these guys just get a kick out of making fans of major guitarists mad. Some of these songs and solos were good. Idiots.

check out Keith's link earlier in the post. There's a Finch paragraph that's hilarious.

Ah yes, Gibraltar . . . I had forgotten about them. I shall have to reacquaint myself.

So poor old John was trashed, eh? That's a sad end. Could he play at all? I saw Brand X just after Unorthodox Behaviour in a small campus hall here in Montreal (not with Phil Collins--I think it was Chester Thompson) and they screamed.

BTW, what's the policy of accepting music around here? I have a 1974 Genesis gig "Live in Montreal" that I think came off the radio. Also have some live Zawinul Syndicate. Be happy to upload it.
