When in December I looked at the January releases and
noticed that there were two albums, one by Steven Wilson
and one by Steve Hackett I thought that surely I would find
2 tracks to be included in Work in Progress..ive 2021 .... and
instead with all the good will I did not succeed ....
Steve Hackett: repetitive classical guitar and background
of symphonic music ... Steven Wilson: if I had to classify
this album from 1 to 10 .... we would need negative numbers.
definitely the worst of his career ...
Steven Wilson likes to experiment .. his first solo career ...
the adventure with the porcupine tree and the new sounds
after leaving Porcupine are all things that they did very well ....
now we hope he understands that he has entered
a dead end street ....
unless he aims to win some popular song festival or
this summer he intends to enter the playlist of some disco .....

.... this beginning of 2021 is affected much more than
2020 by the Covid problem ... last year many groups had
the albums ready and it was a good year for progressive ...
this year to watch the next releases at least until June
there are not many releases of famous bands ... even if
this made me discover on these first 12 tracks of mine ...
ten bands with good music that I was not aware of.
however it is hoped that they aim for the second semester
when with vaccinations the situation should improve for
a good part of the world and start again with some concerts ..
much less optimistic for the European community too dependent
on others and with many mistakes that will cost a good delay in restart.

An Italian combo BLACKSMITH TAKES

Here comes another Big Big Train album. I honestly was a bit wary of reviewing it. The record is called Common Ground, and it releases today, July 30th.

You may remember my review for their last record, Grand Tour. I felt like it was a balanced take, but many people took it as primarily negative, and I ended up feeling bad about it. But my opinion remains unchanged on that record. Thankfully, however, Common Ground doesn't fall into all the same traps as its predecessor.

Big Big Train comes to us from the UK, and they have been seeing some changes of late. One of the things that plagued Grand Tour was the bloated sound, possibly due to the long genealogy of musicians who were involved. Common Ground is definitely scaled back considerably. The musicians present are David Longdon on lead vocals, Gregory Spawton on bass, Rikard Sjöblom on guitars, keyboards, and vocals, and Nick D'Virgilio on drums and vocals. Guests include: a five piece brass ensemble, Carly Bryant on keys and vocals, Dave Foster on guitars, Clare Lindley on violin and vocals, and Aidan O'Rourke on violin. That's basically half the number of people on the last album.

The band's sound has changed somewhat, too. This album isn't as pastoral or retro prog in nature. In fact, though those elements are still present, a more modern, fresh, and even quirky progressive rock has appeared in their place. The music relies on David Longdon's fantastic vocals more than ever, and you'll even hear some heavier rock sections that took me off guard.

The album feels awkward and strange at times, but I've learned to like that about it upon multiple listens. A good example of this is "All the Love We Can Give". This is such a weird song. David (I think) sings in a strange baritone, which doesn't sound natural at all, but the song takes it in stride, and there are some wonderful instrumental portions and also vocal spots from other band members. It shouldn't work, and there are moments that certainly don't, but it overall does feel like a fresh take from this band.

And that is what strikes me as most important here. Common Ground isn't BBT's best album, not by a long shot. If I had to compare it to another BBT release, I would say it reminds me of 2007's The Difference Machine, although I can't vocalize why that is. In my Grand Tour review, I mentioned that the band seemed stuck in a rut creatively, making the same album over and over. Well, I can say with aplomb that this has changed, and that this album represents a renewed creative focus for the band. Does everything hit just right? Not at all, but the band at least brings new ideas and eras into their sound.

Pretty much every song builds on this renewed vision, except for possibly the instrumental "Apollo", which is a good track but definitely could have fit on Grand Tour. Of course, the track preceding it is also instrumental; "Headwaters" is a piano ballad and absolutely gorgeous. "The Strangest Times" opens the record, and while I don't think the chorus is all that memorable, I do like the energy and enthusiasm. "Black with Ink" is another interesting track, feeling more 80s to my ears, and the female vocals (Carly or Clare, I'm not sure) really add an element that BBT has been missing. I'd like to hear more of that. In fact, I remember David doing a duet with Christina Booth from Magenta for the cover of Hackett's "Spectral Mornings", so I think this is a strong suit for David.

My favorite songs all come in the second half. In fact, they are the last three: "Common Ground", "Atlantic Cable", and "Endnotes". The title track feels like it could have been on English Electric, Part 1 (my favorite), save for the lyrical focus on current social issues. It has a great chorus, and David sounds amazing. "Atlantic Cable" is a quirky, vibrant song that lasts for fifteen minutes. In between the various keyboard solos, there is a subtle and even cinematic quality that attracts me. Finally, "Endnotes" closes the album with an illustrious, horn-laden finale. It feels regal and confident.

I also want to mention here that BBT recently released a remix of 2009's The Underfall Yard, an album I have struggled to like ever since it was launched. This remix, however, makes the album much better, and it also adds a bonus track called "Brew and Burgh", and let me tell you?this is one of my favorite songs of 2021. I absolutely love it. It has all the emotion, friendship, and love that I want from BBT, and that sometimes they forget. The music video is absolutely stunning, as well. My kids and I have watched it many times.

I think Big Big Train are making their own way again. Common Ground isn't a perfect album, but it has its moments, and it feels like the first new sound from the band since English Electric, Part 1. I applaud them for recreating themselves and for their obvious class and artistry. For the first time in years, I feel hope and even excitement for the future of this band.

I listened by chance a few days ago to a track from his second
album and how it happens to me when I find it interesting, I went
to find out everything about the artist and his path ....
I learned a lot of information about Benjamin, a character that
my intuition had interpreted well from the causal listening ... in the
biography you will find all the news ... he mainly played jazz
but later you discover that a jazz magazine JAZZWISE asks him
to describe his preferences for the best 5 albums and here the
surprise for me and for the magazine that expected 5 jazz albums
is triggered and Benjamin declares instead:

"FAR AND DISTANT THINGS" is an excellent album very different from
the first much more linked to Jazz, in this second album it explores
new sounds, a cross between fusion and jazzrock played with great
skill, helped in this realization by as many great artists ....
In the album resist some tracks more attributable to jazz similar to
those of the first album but given the good result of this new direction
I am convinced that the next album will be even better and I do not
shield that the surprises are over on the other hand the mix of
preferences with YES and UK on the one hand and Joe Zawinul
Jaco Pastorius Chick Korea Stanley Clarke on the other will surely
influence the production of the next album…

…. "The_Cashectomy" is the track I chose to include
in my best of 2021 But as I said before, the whole album deserves attention.

Biography


Benjamin Croft is a British keyboardist and composer who has recorded
with Randy Brecker, Frank Gambale, Chad Wackerman, Allen Vizzutti,
Barry Finnerty and Mike Miller.
Known for his extensive knowledge and experience in a multitude of
music genres, he is mostly associated with jazz.
At the age of 7, he began piano and trumpet lessons, later
going on to study at Leeds College of Music.
After graduating, he completed several contracts on international cruise
lines and moved to the US. During this period, he toured the world twice,
and worked with artists as diverse as Belinda Carlisle, Leslie Garrett,
The Temptations and The Platters.
Benjamin relocated to London in 2012, where he became a regular
performer at Ronnie Scott’s, the Jazz Cafe, Dean St and The Pheasantry
Pizza Express Jazz Clubs, The Vortex, among others, playing with
the finest musicians on the scene.
He has also performed in the West End Show ’ Straight From the Heart’,
and on TV shows such as ‘The Voice’ and ‘Britain’s Got Talent’.
In 2018, he recorded for Beautiful South founder Dave Hemingway’s
latest project ’Sunbirds', and has been working as a session musician,
composer and arranger on several projects over the years.
In March 2019, Benjamin released his first album ‘10 Reasons To...’ on
33Jazz Records. 12 original compositions reflecting his unique style
and sound ; an audacious crossover between genres that seduced the
press, and the public.
His second album, "Far and Distant Things", was recorded throughout 2020.
An ambitious project featuring legendary musicians from the US and more.
It will be released on Ubuntu Music on August, 6th 2021.

About the album:



March 2018. The production of my first
album had recently concluded and I was keen to keep the momentum
going and keep writing. I decided that this new project would have no
compromises. I would try to improve and expand on all aspects of
my previous album.
I initially contacted a selection of my favourite musicians in the UK
to play on the tracks; Andy Davies (trumpet), Gareth Lockrane (flute),
Henry Thomas and Flo Moore (bass), Tristan Mailliot and Laurie Lowe (drums).
Helen Vollam, principal trombone of the BBC Symphony Orchestra and
Carter Arrington (guitar) were also added to the roster around this period.
The writing process continued and I envisioned the UK musicians
augmented by a US guest star, or two…
In the fall of 2019, I sent out messages to several legendary artists and
lifelong inspirations.
To my surprise, all showed interest. I now had an all star line-up!
Randy Brecker, Allen Vizzutti (trumpet), Frank Gambale, Barry Finnerty,
Mike Miller (guitar), and Chad Wackerman (drums).
Back in 2019, we had no idea what was just around the corner...
The majority of the guest stars had tour schedules that lasted for
the remainder of 2020.
At the time, I was led to believe I only had a window
of the first two weeks of January to record them.
The compositions were recorded in London at Metropolis, Greystoke and
The Church Studios. The studios were selected for their vast tracking
space and unique selection of equipment.
A huge arsenal of keyboards was used on this album. Among them, the
Yamaha CS-80, Minimoog, Prophet 5 and Freddie Mercury's Fazioli
grand piano!
Eight of the compositions were tracked between January and early
March. Then, disaster struck… March 24th 2020 was a day I will
never forget…
The 24th just happens to be my birthday. It also just happened to be
the day I was scheduled to record my final three pieces. Sadly this
was not meant to be. The UK entered national lockdown and everything
was cancelled…
My time off was used wisely to refine the compositions and by late
summer, we were allowed back in the studio. Tracking was completed
at RAK studios in London.
At the start of this project, I only had one person in mind to mix the
tracks; Stephen W Tayler. His work can be heard on many albums that
inspired my compositions. The album was mixed at Peter Gabriel’s
Real World Studios.
Production eventually wrapped up in early 2021. Barry Grint, whose
previous clients include the likes of David Bowie, Madonna and Prince,
mastered the tracks at Air Studios.
The unique artwork for the album is provided by Juno Award Winner
Hugh Syme. His works are firmly planted in the public conscience.
He has designed for Rush, Dream Theater, Whitesnake and many others.
I am immensely proud of this album. A true portrait of my musical mind.
My love of jazz, rock and classical are all captured. The eleven
compositions on this album represent my childhood dreams and
fantasies. Utopian and dystopian, heroes and villains, all depicted.
Concepts I regarded as far and distant things…

Simone Rossetti founder and composer as well as voice and
keyboard player is certainly the leader of this group that has
now pushed the boundaries of their success by releasing their
latest album everywhere.
… ..and meanwhile their long European tour continues

**** The good news for the Italian progressive also comes
from the latest PFM album which, after the disappointing previous
album, comes with some good tracks, one of which also includes
Steve Hackett Jan Anderson and Flavio Premoli

This time the track I chose belongs to a fusion of
a group Isildurs Bane and Peter Hammill
2 totally different ways of interpreting music but following their meeting
they managed to create a very captivating and sometimes hypnotic
sound from art pop and prog to neoclassical and avant-garde all held
together by one of the most singular and influential voices
of the prog music… Peter Hammill… always open to experimentation
and returned to the high levels reached in the first
Van Der Graff Generator albums….
"Pawn Hearts", "Still Life" and "Godbluff" albums
After the first experience resulted in the realization
of the excellent "in Amazonia"
Isildurs Bane and Peter Hammill continue the collaboration by making an equally interesting album "IN DISEQUILIBRIUM"
made in 2 suites, one of 3 tracks and the other of 4 tracks

This is another challenge from the ensemble.
It is one of the most surreal, wackiest, and insane releases I’ve
listened to. There’s this crossover between ambient music,
Frank Zappa, elements of the Rock in Opposition movement
that blends well with the insane textures of both Gentle Giant
and Goblin. And to be allowed to have King Crimson drummer
Pat Mastelotto to lend a helping hand with the ensemble,
it shows that Isildurs Bane are more than just a band, but
a family helping others to bring In Disequilibrium to life.

The challenges inside the group’s labyrinth, just got even bigger!
From the opening 3-part title-track, it is like a movie being brought to life.
You can hear elements of ‘The Sleepwalkers’ thrown in along with
the xylophones channeling the midsection of ‘Peaches En Regalia’
from the Hot Rats period. Mats Johansson is like a conductor
giving his bandmates and Peter directions on where he wants
them to go.


He has given each of the members, a lot of machine gun ammunitions
to create these rapid firing textures. I can hear both Hällkvist and
Croné doing these chase segments for Hammill to catch up to those
insane time signatures to create this alternate score for Robert
Clampett’s Bugs Bunny short from 1943, Falling Hare.

Then, Johansson and Katrine Amsler share this futuristic temperature
rising for Hammill’s voice to come in at the right moment. It’s one
of those crazy and wackiest sequences that visions the ensemble
and Hammill transforming the second half into a chaotic groove!

The third and final section of the title-track takes us into the heart
of the jungle channeling Peter Gabriel’s score to Martin Scorsese’s
controversial classic,The Last Temptation of Christ. It gives us
a sign for revelations to come where we witness a renewal to
start new chapter in our daily lives.

But it isn’t just that, it’s a new beginning for them to press the
rewind button and start all over. Peter lets listeners know that there’s
light at the end of the tunnel. And the big bright lights on the
arrangements gives the ensemble enough rope to reach towards
the surface and seeing the sunlight again.

The four-part suite ‘Gently (Step by Step) closes the album.
It becomes a calm after the storm with its piano, synthesizers,
and xylophone setting up the empty ghost town of the dystopian
wasteland that people are finally getting out of. You can almost feel
a pin drop as the ghost-like vocals fill the city with Eagles soaring
through the sky moving away from the nightmarish landscapes into
a field of dreams.

You can hear aspects of Peter’s solo work from The Silent Corner
and the Empty Stage thrown into the mix. The symphonic structures
along with its mournful organ work, Luca Calabrese’s trumpet echoes
the funeral arrangements while Liesbeth’s violin sends the last rite to
the city that once was beautiful, now a pile of rubble.

Once you get to the third section, it becomes this epic ambient
voyage that carries bits and pieces of Popol Vuh’s Aguirre as the
survivors are sailing into unknown lands. Peter then gives a sermon
to the fallen heroes inside his church as the musicians help
churchgoers bring joy and happiness in their lives.

They also have to understand that while they’ll never forget what
has happened, it will be a part of their history that we will the next
generation in the years to come, not to make the same mistakes again
and again. In Disequilibrium is another welcoming return for the
collaboration of Isildurs Bane’s partnership with Peter Hammill.

As I’ve mentioned earlier, it is beautiful, sinister, epic, and
unexpected changes that will make your mind blown away.
Yes it may not be everyone’s cup of coffee per se, but it is
like a stick of dynamite ready to explode at any second.

Third Album and Third Center for Monarch Trail and "Wither Down"
not only continues the sequence of albums in a positive way but
also raises the level of Track Quality to the point that it becomes
difficult to choose one as the best ... in the previous 2 albums
some less interesting track was here Ken Baird who continues
to be the composer of all songs cancels the decrease in attention
and creates an excellent album ... exceptional use of the piano in
the opening song which then also gives the title of the album ...
among those who have commented on the album more than someone
has seen in the music of this album references to the first IQs….
and others a fusion of the styles of Genesis and Yes… ..
I just want to thank the Monarch Trail for giving us
some more excellent music.

Amarok is back with a new album! Michał and Marta Wojtas are
joined by their old friends – Kornel Popławski and Konrad Zieliński.
The result of this collaboration is the album “Hero” – a spiritual
sequel to the 2017 “Hunt”.

Much like the aforementioned „Hunt”, the upcoming album presents
a fusion of musical styles known and loved by fans and critics alike.
Here the sounds of progressive rock folk and ambient mix together, complemented by a wonderful and subtle guitar virtuosity.
The soundscape feels exotic, thanks to the use of uncommon
instruments such as violin, theremin, wind gong, djembe, harmonium,
flute, and rainsticks.

The pieces have a strong lyrical layer, with their vocals referencing
the ongoing digitalization of our life and the unsure position of a
human in the future world. There are also beautiful instrumental
fragments reminiscent of film scores similar in style to the depictions
from the War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells. Hero is a story of a
protagonist, fighting for survival, going up against reality and
themselves. It’s about everyone courageously facing the unknown.
The lyrics based on this idea, also touch on the current pandemic
and the state of the world.

The upcoming album „Hero” is a collection of innovative, fresh,
and spatial compositions with just as good lyrical parts, that
inquires into our current questions about the future. We recommend
spending a while to relax, reflect and enter the world of this unique
music. The climate of each and every piece mesmerizes the first
time you hear it and brings you back again and again.

I live permanently in my ProgLand, I feel great and sometimes I like to make some visits to the border where I always find Dream Theater very happy or go to more distant lands such as electronic music or go to the territory of great jazzrock-fusion instrumentalists. ... today I chose to breathe the sound of this band that is classified as progressive metal but in many songs definitely metal but always very far from the metal of only noise of many groups ...

The Dream Theater were born in 1985 from the meeting of JOHN PETRUCCI , JOHN MYUNG
and MIKE PORTNOY who attended the same prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston

Taking into account only the current components

in 1991 he joins the group JAMES LABRIE who responds to an announcement from the DT who were looking for a singer and finds himself in a club with 200 other aspirants and wins the challenge that has consecrated him a decisive component of the group's success, very generous in performances live just to make comparisons with the due differences what Robert Plant and Ian Gillan were for Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple

in 1999 he joined the group JORDAN RUDESS which certainly contributes to adding a more prog and less metal sound and this thanks to his admission of being influenced by artists such as Keith Emerson, Tony Banks, Rick Wakeman and Patrick Moraz and having among the his favorite bands Gentle Giant, Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, King Crimson, Jimi Hendrix, Autechre, and Aphex Twin ... also very interested in any new devilry applicable to his keyboards in order to always generate new sounds.

in 2011 MIKE MANGINI last joined the band to replace Mike Portnoy's exit
it's been 10 years now that the line-up hasn't changed and not only do I think it's the best ... but I also hope this remains

returning to MIKE MANGINI I think JAMES LABRIE suggested his entry, who had him in his 3 albums only but apart from this possible recommendation, the biography of this drummer speaks of a child who at the age of 2 and a half was already having fun with a drums and at 9 he trained from 2 to 4 hours a day and then joined the DT with a 360 degree drum set, seeing him live in his percussion cage is a show.


I am pleased to read many positive comments that recognize its value in the following video in which MIKE is training to face the World Tour and he does it with a reduced battery in the same configuration as the recording of the album but uses the base of the excellent ALIEN sent at a speed of 10% higher than the original this to find everything easier in live performances

And here we are finally at this umpteenth Dream Theater album with 2 excellent tracks inside, the first opens the album .. "Alien" and the last "A View from the Top of the World" both very suitable to open their next show on the world tour that are about to start in February 2022 ... both tracks have a long instrumental introduction with a strong impact that when it returns to the initial chorus opens the scene at the entrance of LaBrie ... we will see which song they choose to open the concert

Dream Theater – comprised of James LaBrie, John Petrucci, Jordan Rudess, John Myung and Mike Mangini - was in the middle of a sold-out world tour in support of their last release Distance Over Time and the 20th anniversary of Scenes From A Memory when a Global Pandemic brought the world to a stop. The musicians found themselves at home with LaBrie in Canada and the rest of the group in the States. As fate would have it, they’d just finished construction on DTHQ (Dream Theater Headquarters) —a combination live recording studio, rehearsal space, control room, equipment storage, and creative hive. With LaBrie in Canada, he initially wrote with the band via ZOOM on a monitor in DTHQ. In March 2021, he flew down to New York, quarantined, and recorded his vocals face-to-face with Petrucci. The album ultimately threaded together lean and uncompromising hooks with tried-and-true technical proficiency.
“We just love to play our instruments,” observes Petrucci. “That never goes away. I love to be creative, write, and exercise that part of my mind. We’ve been able to do this for a long time, and we don’t take it for granted. Whenever we get together, we know we can’t disappoint ourselves or our fans, so we manage to try even harder.”

“We approach every album like it’s our first,” adds LaBrie. “It’s been such a great ride, but we’re not going to stop.”

I have chosen for my best tracks of 2021 "A View from the Top of the World" a suite consisting of 3 parts
i. The Crowning Glory
ii. Rapture of the Deep
iii. The Driving Force
which takes place with many variations of rhythm for a duration of over 20 minutes…. The long tracks of the DT are the ones that I like the most and are those in which they manage to enhance the qualities of all the members of the group and where it is also easier to identify them as a progressive metal
band.

Bassist Matt Wiles, drummer Devon Leigh, keyboardist Ben Tweedt
and guitarist Brandon Coleman create a sound that blends
progressive rock, jazz and fusion.

ARCANE WISDOM, the band's entire debut album, is an eclectic
assortment of compositions with diverse musical influences.
The album deals with jazz-rock in its various facets while always
keeping the level of music high, an entire instrumental album ...
demonstrating a richness that means that on the first album they
did not do anything wrong and certainly a group not to be
underestimated anything. and certainly that it could certainly give us
other albums of the same level but also certainly superior to this one ...
difficult to find the best song, I have identified 3 songs,
I have a preference on "GUTS" but the doubt on other 2
"STEAK JAZZ" and "COLEMAN'S QUESTION"
the other songs are also very respectable and without a doubt
those who love jazzrock will have a new group to follow

Drifting Sun biography

Founded in Chesham, UK circa 1994 - Hiatus between 1999-2013 -
Reformed in 2014

DRIFTING SUN were formed sometime during early-90's (originally named Drama),
after French natives Pat Sanders (keyboards) and Manu Sibona (bass) left their homecountry
and landed in the UK. There they met American singer Rafe Pomeroy and four
pieces were recorded in a London-based studio, then sent to Musea for evaluation.
The French label decided to sign the band on their branch-label Brennus and in
1996 the self-titled debut of the band sees the light with Karl Groom participating on one track.

Drifting Sun decided to move on as an independent group, the line-up
was expanded with the addition of Tobin Bryant and Bryant's friend,
guitarist John Spearman, while Pomerey was replaced by another
American vocalist, Chris Martini.By the end of the year 1998 the
band had launched the sophomore effort "On the Rebound".

What followed was a very long break, but recently Sanders gave his
band another chance, gathering a new line-up with singer Peter Falconer,
drummer Will Jones and bassist/guitarist Dan Storey. The third work of
DRIFTING SUN "Trip the Life Fantastic" was released in early 2015,
a digital album, available via several online digital stores.

but I have to say that Drifting Sun are making music that works

"Song of the Wildlands" an album by Clive Nolan one of the most famous keyboard players ex Pendagron ex Arena and many other groups, he collaborated on some albums with Oliver Wakeman son of Rick Wakeman
and perhaps this frequentation led him to write "Song of the Wildlands"
a rock work that must be listened to from beginning to end just to
understand the style is that of "Journey to the Center of the Earth"
by Rick Wakeman .... the atmospheres of the story translated into
music are very beautiful ... the sung parts. ... many artists have
collaborated ... and the choirs formed by 200 people are also very beautiful.
I will not extract a track from this album for my 2021 show precisely
because it must be taken as a single track to be listened to all at
once from start to finish and for this reason I recommend listening
to this excellent album to those who like the genre.

H.E.X. will be the last album from which I will take the last track of 2021
still an Italian Progressive Rock Group, in this year there have been many Italian groups and artists that I have selected
Lanzetti, Rustici, Pipini, Noisy Diners, The Watch, Inner Prospekt,
The Mad Lab, Raven Sad, Corvaglia, Karmamoi, Blacksmith Tales
and now NODO GORDIANO
A Group that was born in Rome in 1994 as a cover band
of King Crimson Genesis Banco
John Wetton also participated in some concerts where tracks
by King Crimson play
They collaborated with the mute aid desk and participated in some
of their concerts Francesco Di Giacomo and Rodolfo Maltese
H.E.X. it is their fifth fully instrumental album and consists of only
2 tracks both 26 minutes… a mix of experimental progressive rock…
alternative rock and psychedelic rock
a formation of three people: the soul of this group is undoubtedly
Andrea De Luca (bass, guitars, synthesizers), then there is Filippo Brilli (Sax) and the good Davide Guidoni (drums, percussion),
together they create a dense interweaving of atmospheres always keeping the listener's attention high and the 26 minutes pass quickly….
