This foolish game, oh it's still the same
The notes go dancin' off in the air And don't you believe it's true, the music is all for you It's really all we've got to share Cause Rockin' and Rollin', it's only howlin' at the Moon. It's only howlin' at the Moon. ~ Kansas |
Re: The most important sentences in prog rock lyrics
Just a thought, there may be a benefit in fine tuning this thread. I see the responses are all over the place (which isn't bad, but makes things a bit hard to follow). I'm thinking along the lines of "most inspirational lyrics", "favorite prog lines from the 70's", "I can out-quote anybody so here's 5 or more 1 liners", "best lyrics re: religion" etc. As I was reading this thread I had a few things I sort of wanted to respond to, but by the time I finished reading, I was feeling schizophrenic!

Re: The most important sentences in prog rock lyrics
This was the quote I used as the original slogan when I started the Gibraltar progrock mailing list way back in...whenever I started that (1989?):
"Art as expression Not as market campaigns Will still capture our imaginations Given the same State of integrity It will surely help us along" To me, that always summed up what I liked about prog. (it's from "Natural Science" on Rush's _Permanent Waves_ album) |
Re: The most important sentences in prog rock lyrics
OK, I'll play. I dunno 'bout most *important*, but some I like a lot are:
"A seasoned witch could call you from the depths of your disgrace And rearrange your liver to the solid mental grace. And achieve it all with music that came quickly from afar, Then taste the fruit of man recorded losing all against the hour" -- Jon Anderson, Close To The Edge (wtf? :) nonsensical, but I love the imagery and vocal rhythm of it) "Us, and them, and after all we're only ordinary men. Me, and you. God only knows, it's not what we would choose to do. Forward he cried, from the rear, and the front rank died. And the generals sat and the lines on the map moved from side to side. Black and blue, and who knows which is which and who is who. Up and down, but in the end, it's only round and round. Haven't you heard it's a battle of words, the poster bearer cried. Listen son, said the man with the gun, there's room for you inside. Down and out, it cant be helped, but there's a lot of it about. With, without, and who'll deny it's what the fighting's all about? Out of the way, it's a busy day, I've got things on my mind. For want of the price of tea and a slice, the old man died." -- Roger Waters, Us & Them (nice how he plays with the echo AND says something poignant) "As he stumbled on his ____. He was delighted as it stiffened, and ripped right through his sock! Oh, Saint Alphonzo would be proud of me! He shouted down the block: Dominus vobiscum, et cum spiritu tuo! Won't you eat my sleazy pancakes just for saintly Alphonzo!?" -- Frank Zappa, Father O'Blivion (again with the vocal rhythm, and funny to boot!) Maybe the Us & Them lyric could compete for most *important* prog lyric. |

When Mike ran the GEPR website, the archives of the mailing list were still available on it. I went to the GEPR site the other day, and there isn't even a mention of the mailing list anymore. Ah well, I guess I'm at least happy that nobody can see the things that I had to say way back then. ;-) |
Re: The most important sentences in prog rock lyrics
"Theusz Hamtaak !"
More seriously I think the Scottish band Pallas has very well-written lyrics, and even if they're not as "historical" as King Crimson or Yes lyrics, they're still great. I like the chorus of "Who's to blame ?" a lot: "Oooh, though the seasons come and go, Still the sickness seems to grow, In the minds, Oooh, though the players names may change, A simple question still remains, Who's to blame ? Who's to blame ?" Pendragon's lyrics on "Not Of This World" are very rich too, especially on the 1st track. For lyrics that fit more in the "historical" side of the topic, I would quote Marillion: "But even jesters cry !", "And thus begins the web", "So here I am once more, in the playground of the broken hearts" |

Re: The most important sentences in prog rock lyrics
Gawd, I can't believe I didn't include this in my first post on this thread, but it had to be added...
"Hi! It's me, the girl from the bus, remember? The last tour? Well, information is not knowledge. Knowledge is not wisdom. Wisdom is not truth. Truth is not beauty. Beauty is not love. Love is not music. Music is THE BEST. Wisdom is the domain of the Wiz (which is extinct). Beauty is a French phonetic corruption of a short cloth neck ornament currently in resurgence..." -- Frank Zappa, The Packard Goose I gotta agree, music is THE BEST. It's the only MAGIC in the world that I have personally experienced and have participated in. Thanks Uncle Frank. |
