You're right R.L, you are in the minority. I love Neil Young's voice. He'll never get an award, but if I can describe it in one word that would is "haunting." He take can simple phrases, put that haunting tenor on them, and it's the best music of all time.
I heard a perfect echo die into an anoymous wall of digital sound. |
I have to admit I'm a Neil young fan myself.
|
Then post a subject called 'Neil Young' ... For Malmsteen I must admit his technique is perfect but I can't feel any emotionnal stuff in his music ... I think music, especially prog rock or metal must communicate feelings to the listeners ...
By the way I think Malmsteen worked with Jens Johannson, who is Stratovarius keyboardist ... Try to listen to Stratovarius recent albums ... kind of a progressive metal/speed metal music. You'll probably have the feeling you've heard 10 times the same song when the disc will be over ... Then you'll know what I think after listening to Rising Force. |
By the way I love Neil Young :D , especially Rockin' in the Free World, that you mentioned sooner.

my Neil opinion
Don't like his voice......enjoy his music. Only thing I detest is "Neil Is God" garbage. He's a good songwriter. If he's a visionary, the natives on Deneb 3625 are laughing at us. :(
I love Decade. And the Crazy Horse stuff is intense (remember the dude walking in circles...the bass player maybe?). Cortez the Killer, etc...love it. He's put out some piss poor stuff though...his cover on "On Broadway" is atrocious. Comes A Time....what a tune! Long may you run! (Elric only on the Moon forum can we jump from Yngwie to Neil...I'll bet Neil even may like Yngwie)! |

I think I also isolated one of the things that bothers me about him. My exposure to him has been mainly the pap that shows up on the Top! Of! The! Rock! Q99 ROQ or whatever the local equivalent happens to be, so my view might not be the most accurate of his entire body of work. Having said that, I think one of the most irritating things about his 'music' is the pompus self-congratulatory socially correct commentary that he's constantly trying to thrust down my throat. I probably had the end of it on the 25,000,000,000th playing of "Southern Man", back in 1992, that set me off. There are other artists that make my teeth itch; some even on The Moon. But few artists have the ability to make me cringe so badly as Kneel Jung. And his kid can't sing either. Roger -Dot- Lee, BAH! BAH! I say... |
And his kid can't sing either.
Are you sure you don't have him confused with Bob Dylan? :D |

And yeah, the Osbournes are the musical equivalent of Microsoft in my eyes, too. :D Roger -Dot- Lee, there's a difference between the two? |
Ahhh! Blasphemy! Neil Young and Crazy Horse's "Change Your Mind" will be played on the next BrainRock epic show. I beseech thee listen and appraise the wonder. If not - deal  :D.

I really don't think Neil Young gives a rat's ass about how he's perceived. That's the bottom line here. |
I agree with Bob Dylan and Jimmy Buffet, but don't knock Tom Petty and The Boss around me!!! :D

but all this debate just goes to show what I was trying to say in a different post - music is SUBJECTIVE. Any attempt to make it objective gets silly quick.
I like Neil young a lot, I think he's a great songwriter. If you don't like his voice, there's not a lot of hope you'll like many songs from him, because he's primarily a singer/songwriter. And, as Rick pointed out, he has put out some really bad stuff. "Landing On Water" is a bad album through and through. "Old Days" and "Everybody's Rocking" were shameful attempts at reacting to current trends. I like Bob Dylan less, mainly because Dylan's voice irritates me somewhat - he brought poetry into rock (or was one of the first at least), and deserves some credit for that. But again, if you don't like his voice, you're not going to like him. I like Springsteen- similar songwriting and voice discussions can apply here. Petty (to ME) is just OK - some good stuff, some pop crap. I don't get how he is compared to the icons - but how can you objectively define that? If his music speaks to you, I won't try to change your opinion. And I guess this is ultimately my point - music is really personal - so why try to take that away from someone? Conversely, why try to change people to your point of view? Neil Young's music moves me - regardless of whether there's a billion or zero people who agree with me. (Buffett is great at what he does - which is simple party music about boats and beaches and drinking. HE doesn't take himself seriously, so neither should you.) |

Well you can’t turn him into a company man You can’t turn him into a whore And the boys upstairs just don’t understand anymore Well the top brass don’t like him talking so much And he won’t play what they say to play And he don’t want to change what don’t need to change And there goes the last DJ Who plays what he wants to play And says what he wants to say Hey, hey, hey And there goes your freedom of choice There goes the last human voice There goes the last DJ Well some folks say they’re gonna hang him so high Because you just can’t do what he did There’s some things you just can’t put in the minds of those kids As we celebrate mediocrity all the boys upstairs want to see How much you’ll pay for what you used to get for free And there goes the last DJ Who plays what he wants to play And says what he wants to say Hey, hey, hey And there goes your freedom of choice There goes the last human voice And there goes the last DJ Well he got him a station down in Mexico And sometimes it will kinda come in And I’ll bust a move and remember how it was back then There goes the last DJ Who plays what he wants to play And says what he wants to say Hey, hey, hey And there goes your freedom of choice There goes the last human voice And there goes the last DJ Check out this interview/article.
