Jumping in late to add my two cents...
'Gates of Delirium' defines Yes for me.
Great guitar work, crashing war scenes (anti-war message, really), soothing beauty and hope--soon, oh soon.

LOTS of close seconds, and 'That, That Is' kinda grows on you!

What is the best Yes epic song?

Close to the Edge?
Revealing Science?
Ritual?
The Ancient?
The Remembering?
Gates of Delirium?
Awaken?
That, That is?

Might have forgotten one, not sure.

I'm thinking a toss up between Close and Awaken.

Yeah! You missed TWO! Mind Drive and Endless Dream.

My vote goes for, uh, ummm... Awaken and Ritual and Gates and Endless Dream...

Well not that anyone cares what I have to say, but all the votes for Awaken have me mystified. I mean, it's a nice enough song, but compared to the drama and intensity of Close To The Edge and Gates, it's a yawner for me. Plus the arrangements of CTTE and Gates blow Awaken and Ritual away.

Doing my share to make the world go 'round...

That's OK I'm not a huge Suppers Ready fan and the Great Nothing bores me... and don't us started on Echoes :smirk:

but I love Awaken.

I like Echoes in general. We had a discussion on it some time back...for me it's just that takes so long to get started, and the middle's a bit long. that dinging piano bothers me...That's really it. It'd be a great 12 minute song. I especially like the King Buiscut (how do you spell that damn word) version..

There is a shorter version, where they cut out some of the middle stuff, on the recent "Echoes" greatest hits release.

a) I like how it takes it's time getting started. I with more bands knew how to "relax." I think I said once on AM before, but I'll say it again, I like bands that I can describe as "patient." They are not afraid to let an idea develop on its own speed without rushing it to "make something happen." See my fondness for Tarentel.

b) The middle bit? I see four distinct sections: The intro and verses, the Jam in A, the "seagulls," and the last verse/outro. If by middle you mean the seagulls thing, it's true that it may be a tad long, but the Jam in A is too short! :rockband:

c) 'Tis not a dinging piano, but a sample of a submarine's sonar ping. Neh. :neener:

Don't get used to it. Happen to be in a library at the moment, but thanks for the sentiment.

I'm playing a Tarentel song on the show next week. It's a SUPERbowl show, so you should guess the song.

Another thread that has morphed into something else............at least it's Pink Floyd and not Kings-bloody-X........Tmesis for VAX there. :neener:

As for Echoes..............I think it's a MASTERPIECE!!!!!!!!! I love the "Dings". Perfectly set the scene. I love the way the vocals come in. They move it on beautifully. The section where it gets "funky" gets me dancing EVERY time and then.............

The central section, Rick's "Middle Bit" makes me think of a Lighthouse or Beacon sweeping across a calm sea. It's NOT too long..it FITS!!! Then the switch back to the vocal and ending makes for a perfect ending.

If you want to get a REAL feel for the incredible POWER of this song, watch Pink Floyd "Live at Pompei". The vision of the band playing live and the edits of mount Etna are MESMERISING!!!!

A true PROG moment in time (no Floyd Pun intended, honest :) )

Flame on Rick!!!!!!!!!

Step back...

Here's a post from Jim, from a thread I found. The reason I made that statement (don't get US started on Echoes) was that I remembered Jim saying something about it. My memory was correct, here it is...

hehehe - I was wondering how long it would take before somebody jumped on "Learning To Fly". I expected it, but that wasn't just bait - I do like the song. I did not say it was one of their best, just one of my favorites. I particularly like the lyrical content. And it is not attempting to be an epic - it works perfectly as a fairly simple 5 minute song.

I do like Atom Heart Mother better than Echoes. It's a bit disjointed, but I think it says and does a whole lot more than Echoes. I stick to my original statement - Echoes is a great 5 minute song. At 23 minutes, it's mediocre. The other factor is I probably heard Echoes more times in any single high school year than I've heard Atom Heart Mother in my life - so the "familiarity breeds contempt" factor may be coming into play.

Including POTW was probably trolling on my part, tho I do enjoy the simplicity. Thanks for biting...

That was our own Program Director....granted this quote I pulled out of context, so read back.....

go back on a search for "Echoes" and not only will you find a full discussion (on Floyd songs) but another thread praising the Pompei concert. It's a neat read, with posts by some long lost Moonies. there's even an Old Sol thread!
