There are quite a few artists out there who've purposefully written pretty music and then put noise on top of it. There are bands who's chosen chords and harmony are extremely dissonant. There are artists who's improvisational nature means at times the piece is barely holding together. None of this constitutes noise. If so, then while removing fusion Miles, we should remove the much more cacophonic improvs from 70s King Crimson. They're much more "challenging" and "noisy." at times. Define noise. Something you don't like, or something that actually is not music? :grump: |
Re: Aural Moon unlistenable
If I may just add my 2 cents re: "noise" -
I seems to me that, while I don't think this is the appropriate forum to discuss the definition of prog, I think that it is all about expanding the boundaries of musical convention. When Crimso and Yes and Genesis et. al. were first producing their music, it was mostly considered experimental or unusual at the time. Rock-n-roll itself was decried as noise by many during its formative years. Progressive music is about using different sounds, structures or harmonic situations, and sometimes this requires the use of elements that are conventionally considered noise. Admittedly, much of what I would consider to be "noise music" (e.g. Einsturzende Neubauten) I don't regard as "prog rock," due to the absence of the "rock" element or mood (yet another vague definition here...). Of course, this is just MHO. As for jazz, I do think of fusion-y groups as being in the prog genre. This is because the reason it was named fusion to begin with was that it was a fusion of rock and jazz. Artists such as Brand X, Jeff Beck, Miles Davis, Mahavishnu, Weather Report, etc. are examples of such, but not necessarily the entire catalog thereof qualifies (Miles is a good example of this since some of his music I think of as more straight, if unusual, jazz). Again, just my opinion. AM has eschewed some material that I would consider prog rock, but I'm not going to go away just because of that. For the most part, I enjoy the variety of music available on this station, and I commend the administrators of this site for this. As an aside, I would like to say that there are some artists that I find I don't enjoy (I wont mention them by name because I realize that there are some rabid fans of these groups here and I don't want to start some sort of flame war...), but it's primarily because I find the music to be a little too derivative of other more talented artists, but I listen anyway. Who knows? Perhaps I will grow to like them after all... Thank you for the music, all, and don't let the bastards get you down! I dont follow. What more does he wants? This is actually a vast variaty of the best progressive music produced. If its "decent music" he is after he must seek else where. This station is a bless for my progessive ears. :) Gambale

Not that there's anything wrong with any of them, but if that's all you want to hear, then I'd suggest loosing your credit card on Amazon and leaving the rest of us in peace. Just sayin'. Roger -Dot- Lee, gettin' better, thanks. |
Re: Aural Moon unlistenable
To say AM is unlistenable is total bull s**t
Those whom don't like leave Btw we need u2 here |
Re: Aural Moon unlistenable
Before I found AM, I had been listening to radioparadise.com, good music, but a very broad spectrum, depending on who was DJing, and AM was a great change because it was more focused on the genre (and much better music at that). A few songs back, SAM played Wall of Voodoo's "Mexican Radio",WTF! Moono'd like some U2 (sorry to disagree with you little brother), what's next, Sanatra and Culture Club? Just because we individuals like an album and want to donate it, and no matter how great it might be, that doesn't necessarily mean it fits here (maybe I'll donate my Spike Jones and C. W. McCall collections!). I make a living as a sculptor, but I've been known to paint on occasions, and when you mix together too many colors, no matter beautiful they may be, you get a real shitty brown, and there are times I find AM losing its vivid hues and starting to smell a little funny; maybe we have reached the time and place to define just what constitutes "prog", and cull out the square pegs - at least from SAM's playlist, if not from the RQ library. Personally, I can't stand the sound of Jon Anderson's voice, but he and Yes are all but foundational in the genre and most of my fellow moonies love them, but are there really enough of us who actually enjoy Sun Ra, Magma, Miles, etc. that necessitates their inclusion - would we be at a loss without them? Maybe just the fact that this thread exists and has grown to this size in three weeks, in and of itself says that we have a problem.
