to you, Jim -

you got it! I messed up in my haste to get a question out. I was looking for Kansas, then Livgren, then Ronnie Dio (he was on the Seeds of Change Livgren album) - but, I stuck Purple in after Dio, then went to Blackmore, and then all of the other answers are correct. The error - Dio was never in Purple!

A very egregious error, and I am embarrased.

Next time (if I ever get another question correct) I will not be so stupid.

Anyway,

over to you, Jim............

Following the same format - get from Soft Machine to Simple Minds in 10 steps.

My steps are: Soft Machine, artist, band, artist, band, artist, band, artist, artist, Simple Minds - but I'll accept any 10 legitimate steps...

Last two before Simple Minds are probably the toughest point of the question.

Rick and Roll 08-15-2003 12:00 PM

this is great

I have four directions to go, and I have three where 9 of the 10 work. I'm getting messed up by getting the artist/band thing in order. Since I may not be able to devote the time until later, someone may get it first.

Good question!

Rick and Roll 08-15-2003 12:55 PM

ok, let's try this one

I slotted in Morris Pert, Oldfield, Daevid Allen, Pierre Moerlen, al kinds of stuff. I even tried the Pretenders. They probably could work with some thought, but I have:

Soft Machine
Allan Holdsworth
UK
Bill Bruford
Genesis (Bruford on Seconds Out)
Phil Collins (he's on everything - he could be in all answers!)
Brand X
John Goodsall
John Giblin (also in Brand X, but played on Fire Merchants and Wilding/Bonus with Goodsall) - there were many others on there - Collins again, Bayete, etc.)
Simple Minds

progdirjim 08-15-2003 05:04 PM

Good one - different from mine, but I'll accept it. I had forgotten the Giblin connection!

Mine was:
Soft Machine - Holdsworth - UK - Jobson - Curved Air - Francis Monkman - Sky - Herbie Flowers - Lou Reed (Herbie played on Transformer, and I think a few other albums) - Simple Minds (Lou did a vocal cameo on "This Is Your Land" from Street Fighting Years. I think the Lou Reed angle would have taken awhile to figure out, but Like I said, I'll accept any legitimate answer - take it away!

Rick and Roll 08-15-2003 10:44 PM

Whoa

Next time, you should let us suffer for a while before divulging your answer - yours was a lot more interesting!

If I come up with anything in the next day or two, OK - if not, I'll send it back to you.

Rick and Roll 08-16-2003 03:40 PM

Ok, let's try this

I'm going to take a break from the link format - I had a couple of neat ones to try, but just wanted a variety.

There are seven people mentioned in the following lyrics. Please supply the person (could be a general name, not just a proper name) where you see the band name inserted. For example:

(Genesis) Imperial Aerosol Kid. The answer of course, is Rael.

1. My name is (Gentle Giant), and I have come from Hell.

2. So now you're Mr. (Fish), just another alien, living on the planet.

3. I'm just a (Flower Kings), in the eyes of the world.

4. And the (Pink Floyd) sat, and the lines on the map moved from side to side.

5. So slip the chain, and I'm off again, you'll find me everywhere, 'cause I'm a (Jethro Tull).

6. As seen by (Yes) performing scenes of the magical way.

7. The Turk, the Arab, and the (ELP), will soon have pennies on their eyes.

Good luck!

KeithieW 08-16-2003 05:24 PM

Nice one R+R, but.............

1) Panurge
2) Fixit
3) Clown
4) Generals
5) Rover
6) Zeus
7) Spaniard

Shame on you! You should know my fave bands by now :D

Rick and Roll 08-17-2003 11:57 AM

Yes!

Did not intend it to be difficult - tried to stick with "established" bands. Will make it harder in the future.

Nice job with the Fish (what a great song!).

Go Keith..................................let's see what you got.

KeithieW 08-17-2003 12:23 PM

Another link type quezzie!!!

Get from 1) Jethro Tull to 11) Motorhead.

It goes 1) Jethro Tull, artist, band, artist, artist, band, artist, artist, band, artist, 11) Motorhead.

One of the links is very tricky (I think) but knowing you guys you'll probably sail it!!!

Rick and Roll 08-17-2003 09:11 PM

Better leave this one -

I know I can link from Tull to anything else - I have a feeling, however, that the last three are Hawkwind, Lemmy, and Motorhead, and inexplicably, I am not the least bit familiar with Hawkwind. Oh well, I can at least play along!

KeithieW 08-18-2003 02:57 AM

That was the really trick link but......

The link before Hawkwind was the one I thought might be the hardest as this person only guested with Hawkwind on a tour or maybe two. I saw them together at the Canterbury festival a couple of years ago and they did 'Silver Machine' together.

As a clue, Carl Palmer used to be a member of his band before ELP but CP isn't the person I was looking for but thinking about it CP would fit the chain too.....another clue there.....this should steer you in the right direction.

Rick and Roll 08-18-2003 07:54 AM

OK folks -

I'm spending too much time on this - I'm going to get fired!

8) Arthur Brown
9) Hawkwind
10) Lemmy K.
11) Motorhead

So, 7 could be Palmer, A. Parsons, or K. Schulze

Go for it, someone!

Or it COULD be Vincent Crane!!!!

We're getting more metal as we move backwards too.

Rick and Roll 08-18-2003 10:16 AM

Too much for me

I was looking through the website on Atomic Rooster (6) and then Chris Farlowe - I didn't know he did a version of "Stormy Monday" - is that the same song Tull covered in the 60's?

That's enough cheating for me - if I don't know it by memory, I don't know it.

KeithieW 08-18-2003 11:09 AM

Stormy monday......

I believe it was the same song. Excellent version Tull did too. Have you heard it???

Regarding the link. Carl Palmer would work before Arthur brown too as he was in the same band as Vince Crane.

Rick and Roll 08-18-2003 11:40 AM

Stormy

It's on the boxed set - which I really enjoy. Also "Nightcap" is wonderful compilation.

KeithieW 08-18-2003 11:54 AM

Chateau D'Isaster tapes.

Nightcap is excellent.

I loved hearing the rest of the Chateau stuff. You can really see where "Passion Play came from on hearing that stuff. I really glad IA agreed to their releasing them.

KeithieW 08-21-2003 02:50 AM

A clue needed????

Well the link from Tull is Tony Iommi............

Any help??????

BoogieBoy 08-21-2003 10:37 AM

Keithy-babes,

Here I am but I have absolutely no idea of the answer to your question. Is it something to do with 'The insignificant factors of the astral time plane ?'
