well, following the recent requestmess, I thought that perhaps a thread that could offer alternative choices to some of the over-requested bands might be a good idea. RogerDot agreed, and there it was...
of course, the thread has veered quite a bit from it's original intent, so maybe it should be unstickied...

If you like Genesis try Pendragon, Magenta and of course The Musical Box (Well, the last one is cheating).

In keeping with my long standing tradition (well, this is the third time I've done it, so that makes it a tradition,right?), I'd like to take the opportunity to yank this thread back to what it was intended to be.

But I'd like to do it with a twist.

I'd like to offer a challenge, a chance to vent one's opinions, if you will.

I'll start out the "if you like" part of the thread. Whoever wants to can fill in their opinion of the second half.

Having explained myself in far too many words, I'll take this opportunity to get to the point:

(I didn't bother with Genesis or Yes since those are the obvious ones, and I didn't bother with GY!BE or Don Cab since nobody in their right minds likes them anyway :P )

I guess I don't like to play along with these things. For instance, just because I like Marillion doesn't necessarily mean I like Iluvatar. I like Iluvatar because I do.

I should like IQ if I like the others? Hogwash. IQ to me is OK, not great.

Should I like Citizen Cain because they are a Genesis clone? Not a chance.

I think I was a bit taken back because I saw Tool compared with "early Stavesacre". I don't see it.

You may like the first two records a lot.

But the next two (especially Gravity) have drifted away from this comparison.

This is why I don't particularly like this thread.

Having said that, please allow me to recuse myself from it so that others may enjoy it.

The only thing I'll say in defense of this thread, Rick, is that it is geared towards listeners with significantly less knowledge than you. In that case, the Iluvatar/Marillion/Genesis comparison may be helpful. It's still up to each individual to make up their mind whether they like a band or not. And, like the "better than" threads, a lot of opinion is involved. But ultimately, if one new listener that hasn't heard of Iluvatar checks them out and likes them, then this thread has a lot of value. In my opinion...

agreed. Actually, my knowledge is abut average in comparison to most that listen to the Moon.

Unfortunately, I'm a devil's advocate in thought. If I'm told something sounds like another, I will resist. Just hardheaded.

When stated as you have Jim, it makes a lot of sense. I need to be more cognizant of what can be accompilshed even if it is flawed.

I used to do a "If you like that you'll like this" show for hospital radio for a few months until my studies got in the way.

That was a Classical music show though.

We'd start off with a piece of music and play others along the same theme. That could be less well known pieces by that composer. Pieces by his pupils or teachers. Things that were in the same mood......things like that.

It was fun to do.

Not bad.........but I don't agree with the Ice Age. Didn't remind me of Rush. Saw them at Nearfest a while back.....they had no dynamics....have they changed in 6 years? I haven't kept up on them.

Play random notes? I thought you understood music. If you think Don Cab is mindless, you need to rethink. Don Cab is of a different mind, yes, but they hardly play mindless notes. Most of what they play is meticulously precise.

Their album Liberation felt very Rush-like to me, particularly in song construction. Its length aside, "The Lhasa Road" felt like it would have fit right in with Rush's late-80s/early-90s albums.

Admittedly, Rush's late-80s stuff is my favorite period in their career, whereas I find their 70s (pre-Moving Pictures) stuff to be (to put it mildly) weak (Permanent Waves is the earliest Rush album I own). So if Rush to you is 2112 and its contemporaries, then I'd say we're just looking at Rush from completely different perspectives. :)

I really got into rock music around 1988 (college years, for me), mostly through The Who and Jethro Tull, so yes, I discovered Rush through Presto and Hold Your Fire. HYF is easily my favorite Rush album. The two pre-Permanent Waves albums I've heard of their - 2112 and A Farewell to Kings - were both very boring to me, and I quickly sold them.

I am a huge Jethro Tull fan. I have nearly everything they've released. They have their ups and downs as any band with a 35-year history does, but by and large they are terrific. Unfortunately, the only time I saw them live was 1989, which was a weak concert in support of one of their worst albums (Rock Island). On the other hand, I have very much enjoyed their last few albums, and Ian Anderson's Rupi's Dance solo album is fantastic. It seems like his voice is finally back close to where it was before he lost it in the mid-80s.

I personaly think that the recomendations at www.amazon.com or co.uk is a good way to start. If you rate a favorite album, they give you some sugestions. AMG just to be good resource for theese sort of questions but I have somewhat given up on them since they changed their site..It so sad.... :-)

Here's my two cents...If you like ELP,try every band who's name starts with the letters "TR":Trace,Trilogy,Triumvirat,Tritonus and The Trip!Ciao! Alain

Oups!Almost forgot Triade from Italy.No joke ,all of the bands mentioned above do sound like ELP,that is,they play classical influenced prog,most of them in trio format,with strong emphasis on keyboards.
