The most important sentences in prog rock lyrics

Just a reflection... what do you think are the most cult quotes/lines from lyrics in prog rock albums. The ones that could be considered classic for genre fans..

I think that recently the one that became very recognizable and surely one of the best remembered will be "Life is like a beanstalk". Perhaps the most distinctive line in whole SMPTe album and if we add to this that it was the most sensational album of the year then it seems it can't be forgotten.

I'll name a few more but later ;)..I'm very curious about your thoughts...

"Me, I'm just a lawnmower, you can tell me by the way I walk!" from "I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)" by Genesis.

"Talk, Talk, it's only talk." from "Elephant Talk" by King Crimson

"Confusion will be my epitaph" - You all know where this comes from ;)

I know a lot of quotes from other prog rock, but they mostly have personal meanings and I'm sure thay aren't that important in the history prog per se.

Great topic.

BTW, that Transatlantic song (and the quote) is from a cover of Procol Harum's "In Held Twas I" Quite a good cover, methinks.

My favorite line? How can you beat Yes for great quotes?

"Flying Shining Purple Wolfhounds Tell Me Where You Are!"

"Changed only for a sight of sound, the space agreed."

Re: The most important sentences in prog rock lyrics

I could get lost in this thread.

Yesspaz's quintessential Yes quotes:

"Change we must as surely time does."

"Where we are coming from or where we go, we only know we come with sound."

"It all comes through this feel."

"We exist through this strange disguise."

"Someone shouted "open the door" - Lookout!"

"At the start of every day
A child begins to play
And all we need to know
Is that the future is a friend of yours and mine"

"Now the verses I've sang
Don't add much weight to the story in my head
So I'm thinking I should go and write a punch line
But they're so hard to find
In my cosmic mind
So I think I'll take a look out of the window"

"Like the time I ran away,
Turned around and you were standing close to me."

"No point in kidding,
Let the children split the atom-"

"And you may find time will blind you-
This to just remind you all is meant to be."

"We love when we play."

KeithieW 07-25-2006 05:00 PM

Re: The most important sentences in prog rock lyrics

If you're talking Yes lyrics. How about:

"And the door was open wide
Inside was a diamond chair
Where I sat when I was young
I wrote down the words"

Beautiful when put into context.

Maybe "we're only in it for the money" before that but definitely the most important sentence in all of music is "don't eat that yellow snow". Life, universe and everything in one line.

If I had to be serious:
Sensibility
Armed with sense and liberty
With the heart and mind united
In a single perfect sphere

Jon Anderson...how can the wind with it's arms all around me...how can it WHAT Jon? You're missing a verb! :shootmeno

Anyway, I'm not sure what's important to others, but here's some that hit me right:

"And all your money, won't another minute buy" ...Kansas

"You can go sleep at home tonight, if you can get up and walk away"...Who

"Sadder still to watch it die, than never to have known it".....Rush

"Brave the knife to make em bigger, take a pill to make it harder, suck the fat then run the treadmill, give them toys for time...buy the land then pour the concrete, drive the car but leave the kiddies, break their bones then ask forgiveness, pose while they're in rags"...Salem Hill (So Human)

A place to stay
Enough to eat
Somewhere old heroes shuffle safely down the street
Where you can speak out loud about your doubts and fears,
and what's more,
No one ever disappears,
You never hear their standard issue
kicking in your door.
You can relax on both sides of the tracks and maniacs
don't blow holes in bandsmen by remote control,
And everyone has recourse to the law,
and no one kills the children anymore.
And no one kills the children anymore.

"Have you ever known someone who builds you up to let you down?
Sincere apologies, sugar-coated promises;
And as usual it's everybody else's fault...

"Could it be the human race is run?"

-Pink Floyd

Tinker, alone within a storm,
And losing hope he clears the leaves beneath a tree.
Seven stones lay on the ground,
Within the seventh house a friend was found,
And the changes of no consequence will pick up the reins from nowhere.

Cover is good but not perfect. And the song (composition-wise) is perfect. One of the few tracks that could be used as answer when one was asked "What's prog actually?" There is all in this song. Real journey.

My second favourite quote is:

And the trees are all kept equal
By hatchet,
Axe,
And saw ...

I think that also a cult one...

"And all you touch and all you see
Is all your life will ever be. "
/Pink Floyd/

"Still waiting for my saviour, storms tear me limb from limb;
my fingers feel like seaweed...I'm so far out I'm too far in."
/Van der Graaf Generator/

"No matter how closely I study it,
no matter how I take it apart,
no matter how I break it down,
It remains consistant.
I wish you were here to see it.
I like it."
/King Crimson/

"Dawn of light lying between a silence and sold sources,
Chased amid fusions of wonder, in moments hardly seen forgotten..."
/Yes/

"Happy and I'm smiling,
walk a mile to drink your water.
You know I'd love to love you,
and above you there's no other."
/Jethro Tull/

"I can see clearly,
A face in the sky,
Moon`s in your eye,
You`re passing me by.
Tell me the reason why. "
/Camel/

"Ladies and Gentlemen

"I gotta take pills to kill my pain
To kill my pleasure I blow my brain
I get so high I fall down again
What's happenin' man?"

"Just take a pebble and cast it to the sea,
Then watch the ripples that unfold into me,
My face spill so gently into your eyes,
Disturbing the waters of our lives."

such a fine group of lyrics i'll add these from Echolyn's Mei:

"We were careless...To be taken by such misery
That tastes of violence—the saints are silent—God won't perform here anymore!"

and this gem further on:
"My love is pale....a perfect...shade of...fear"

and my fav in the song
"I would do anything it takes to feel the sun again...I am ready to receive"

good thread
