Steely Dan
These guys might not be exactly what you would call Prog, but they're a nice blend of Jazz, Pop, and Blues. They really defy categorization.

Re: Steely Dan
I know some may shoot me down for this but I agree in the name of good music.
Not only some great tunes that will stand the test of time but also lyrics for the thinking people. Furthermore, some great playing and the cleverest of song writing. |
Re: Steely Dan
I won't shoot you down, The Dan rocks (or should that be grooves?). Not prog, but great music nonetheless, I think Fagan has called it fake fake jazz :).

Re: Steely Dan
They are coming here to Australia for the 1st time ever
|
Re: Steely Dan
what's your favorite? I like The Royal Scam. The Caves of Altimira is a perfect three minute song..... may have to do a Dan show....but much later on...

Just last summer I saw them at Jones Beach Theater up here on L.I. Michael McDonald joined them after he opened the show. Don't miss the show! |

Aja: Another great one. Steve Gadd's Grammy winning drum work on that tune is unbelievable. I agree Caves of Altamira: great Actually there are very few SD songs that I wouldn't listen to over and over. BTW: Larry Carlton would be a great artist for the Moons' collection. |
Re: Steely Dan
I too am a great fan of the Dan...Rick, please do a show

I've heard that the lead on Kid C is considered one of the greatest....
ok I'll do one, maybe June..... I may set it up like the Saga show, where i just put the entire set list in sentence form....there could be fun stories about Fezzes and Gold Teeth... |
Re: Steely Dan
The Dan rules. They are so prog, they don't even know it.

Re: Steely Dan
You can count me as a Fan of the Dan...and it's hard to pick a favorite. I like the Scam, Katy, Aja, Gaucho, but Countdown is an all-time classic! I've said before that the Dan may not be prog, but certainly progressive!

Don't get me wrong ST and MO fans, there's nothing wrong with them, but IMHO they are more closer to Pop. BTW: Ther is a whole host of Jazz Fusion on this site which I definitley love: RTF, Al D., Jean Luc etc. |

Not everyone can be pleased 100%, but Jim does a great job of arbitrating what goes on the Moon. That's why I will play music that may not be easily approvable (my Zep show, blocks of Iron Maiden, Tool) but never push for inclusion (although I firmly state that Metal does not mean non-prog). The only beef I ever have is excluding selected tracks. Take the aforementioned Supertramp. I don't agree that "Give A Little Bit" should be excluded...so what it's overplayed - it's a great song. Jadis for instance is more pop consistently than that song. But again, it's really hard to say "this band is on so this shouldn't either". And I can always play it myself at home. I don't care for the Strawbs, and think they're not prog (and yes I know it's not a popular opinion) but I'd never ask for removal, or inclusion of Fairport Convention. Jazz fusion (maybe my favorite genre) is a tough call. There are many more artists that could be added, but the genre is so overloaded, so we only have the big names. As usual, I've become so long-winded I lost my train of thought.... :haha: :dunno: |

Re: Steely Dan
I love Steely Dan, but don't think they belong on the moon.
|
Re: Steely Dan
I am currently of the opinion that Steely Dan does not belong on the Moon, but that is subject to change. I do own every Steely Dan album, as I like them a lot.
I'm totally OK with a Steely Dan show, of course. |

I'd hate to have someone who is not too familiar with SD to go "Oh that band..right" I mean there are so many SD songs that have such a cool groove:ie "Black Cow", "Home At last", "Royal Scam" :dunno: |

I just hope we have the opportunity to be a going concern so that I can play more shows. As much of a grind it is sometimes, there's no shortage of ideas and it remains much fun. Now to get to bed so I can at least have 5 hrs sleep before I spend most of Saturday cleaning the house so that 40 people can hide for my wife's 50th birthday surprise..... |
Re: Steely Dan
Steely Dan for me is awesome. But when you have to 'classify' it, I can't put it into prog. But I love the Dan.
Now, that said, Fagan & Becker, the core of SD are inspirations to prog musicians everywhere. As well as prog listeners. A special show from the Rickmeister would be a very fitting tribute. IMHO. Just don't ask Katy. We all know she's a liar. :knowing: :yougo |

favorite Dan tracks.. Charlie Freak and I Got the News

Re: Steely Dan
Thanks Poda... never knew you liked The Dan!.. They are one of my all time fave bands... probably third to King Crimson and VDGG. their best track I think is Your Gold Teeth II from Katy Lied... smoothest drumming I have ever heard.
As far as the Dan on the Moon?... well I always considered Supertramp (whom I love) to be in the same vein as the Dan... not really catagorizable ( is that a word?)...but they are here... I also don't consider Rush to be prog.. They are ROCK... freakin MULLET ROCK at that!... and they are here much to my endless chagrin.. As far as THE DAN goes... they are far closer to prog than many bands here but I personally don't think they belong on the Moon... what makes them GREAT is that they can NOT be trapped in any genre... I think they are the greatest band of all time for this reason.. I know teenagers, older people, blacks, whites, hispanics, women , men... everyone likes The Dan... it's just plain happy music with a message... we need more of this on the airwaves in these days of depressingly meaningless socially polarizing homogeneous musical drivel. |
