10 of the best uknown prog albums
There should be a list of albums that are "10 out of 10", but relatively unknown, for prog fans like me - who tune into AM and we feel like a kid in a candy store. Just show us 10 albums to soak up for a while!
Criteria: 1. Albums that are outside of the mainstream areas (Yes, Genesis, Spock's Beard, Flower Kings, etc.) These can be from any country, any time period, etc. 2. Must be relatively devoid of clunkers, no throwaway tracks. 3. International albums are encouraged (obviously) and last but not least 4. These albums should be your "favorite albums that no one knows about." Go ahead and share! Thanks to the Moon and the Moonies for making all this possible. |

AUFKLARUNG della pesta l'oscuro piacere 1995 Italy , their only CD , sold out, 4 tracks only for around 45 minutes of astounding prog rock, with Chico Grosso ( from Asgard) on lead vocals

Re: 10 of the best uknown prog albums
Well, I can't guarantee that no one knows about these, my favorite lesser known groups, but here's a shot at it.
First band I thought of was Credo - who's nickname is The Best Prog Band no one has heard of. But since many of us saw them at RosFest I decided not to list them in my top fave. But here's a big plug for them. 1) Alas - Alas 2) Bennie Maupin - Penumbra 3) Garaj Mahal - Blueberry Cave 4) Moth Vellum - Moth Vellum 5) Karnataka - Delicate Flame of Desire 6) Iceberg - Coses Nostres & Arc-en-ciel 7) Violent District - Terminal Breath 8) Anima Mundi - Septentrion 9) Talamasca - Rights of Passage 10) Carmen - Fandangos in Space And here are the runner's up: The Flock - The Flock Alex Machacek - Improvisation General Fuzz - Inner Sunset Persephone's Dream - Moonspell Violent Silence - Kinetic Seven Reizh - Strinkadenn Ys I hope this gets the ball rolling. |

Loreena McKennitt - An Ancient Muse (Celtic Prog?) 4.) The Doors - Other Voices & Full Circle (both released without Jim Morrison) 5.) Magna Carta - Seasons & Lord of the Ages (more folk rock but some prog numbers) |

Well OK, here's a few at random that I like that aren't all that mainstream I guess, although they are pretty mainstream on the Moon:
Rain - Cerulean Blue Frost - Milliontown Pilotdrift - Water Sphere Ozric Tentacles - Erpland (or any album really) Happy The Man - Beginnings National Health - Complete Jade Warrior - Waves or Way Of The Sun One Shot - Ewaz Vader Pineapple Thief - 10 Stories Down Group 87 - Group 87 One man's mainstream is another man's obscure of course. ;) These are all over the map style-wise but are all on the Moon, I'd request a tune or two to check the albums out before buying. |

The one record that immediately comes to mind, and I've written to Jim about this was released 20 years earlier than Mailo's pick, and is Goblin's Profondo Rosso. Translates to deep red, as in blood. If you are from Italy you most likely know this but outside the country I suppose less so. |
Re: 10 of the best uknown prog albums
Above I selected already 10 albums but forgotten one incredible album.
It's the untitled album from german band GILA, one of the finest krautrock albums ever made. It's a mainly instrumental trip with cosmic and etnic textures but also with space rock and psychedelic parts. For those who like Pink Floyd's 60's albums and early Hawkwind releases. Very recommanded !! |

isaiah, a 70s christian prog rock band i got from a torrent site but lost the web sites name
|
Re: 10 of the best uknown prog albums
another band I just thought of that I discovered in Minnesota, USA is a band called Taï Phong. Taï Phong is a bit of an oddity, as it is a French band founded by Vietnamese brothers Kahn and Taï Ho Tong. The sound is comparable to Camel, and Novalis, but the most telling description is 'France's answer to Barclay James Havest.'

The first line-up of that french band gave birth to the solo career of a well known french singer called Jean jacques Goldman ( hi pitched voice, good axeman), he played guitar with tai Phong ( that name just for the record means typhoon), he left the band in order to make his tour of duty in the french army , i think he never rejoigned the band after the army because of internal trouble :rockband: their official discography is made of 3 LPS Tai Phong 75/Windows 76/Last flight 78 or 79 all on Warner Bros ( for Europe) . I got the first ( and best imho) know the second, third is unknown to my old ears8-q |

Some outstanding choices Jim (especially Black Noise) but I'm surprised at the Ad Infinitum. Corny prog lyrics and overdone arrangements - but I must admit, musically excellent..

Re: 10 of the best uknown prog albums
One of my unknown favorites is by a French band called Yog Sothoth. I have their only album (to the best of my knowledge) from 1984, which was self-titled. I guess they were primarily a RIO band that often leaned toward avant-jazz. The closest comparison that comes to mind is Shub Niggurath, but it's not entirely accurate.

Rosanna S Says...
