The guy has very very good stick control. I tend to get annoyed when people 'flash it all up' with unnecessary stick twirling. Also not a fan of the double Bass... it used way too much to create a rumble underneath the stickwork. Mostly just distracting.

The guy has the potential to be better than Peart or Portnoy... just not yet. It is one thing to "have the chops" and another to know what to do with them. His solo seemed to meander around without structure.

I really enjoy watching a good drummer, thanks for posting the link.

Makes me miss the 'old' drumming days.

It's really difficult to rate musicians against one another. With percussionists, it's does the musician fit the music. Bruford may be my favorite drummer but with Yes he really adds little White can't.

Some that may not be technically in the jaw dropping league that I enjoy are Rayford Griffin from Ponty's band, Koen Roozen from Flamborough Head, and Barriemore Barlow from Tull. Like frampton, they know when to hit the right notes...

Technically you could probably rank instrument players but rating musicians is another story...

I'd like to add how glad I am that this thread didn't digress into some "my drummer is better than yours thing", as Lellu asks and I'll answer, no it isn't necessary to rank musicians on technical proficiency, but neither is it wrong to admire what folks can do. I know Neil is worshiped by many proggers, but I'd bet if you ask him of all the guys who've performed at MD festivals he wouldn't say he's most impressed by himself (hard for a drummer to admit that lol, but that's a guess and I don't know Neil). Anyway the MD DVDs are a treasure trove for anybody that loves drums and you can see some of it via youtube nowadays :)

Finally, a drum solo IS the ideal place for double bass, but I do agree DB is used far too often nowadays, especially in metal, I mean LZ was plenty heavy but Bonzo made it happen with one kick drum no? So I guess what I'm saying is, give the guy a break on using a bunch of double bass in his solo, rag on him if he uses it when he actually overdoes it playing with other musicians. ;)

That's a very informative post jtm......nice one.

On the subject of Double Bass kits, my take is that they look good and can be a great benefit when soloing but even then they are not absolutely necessary. I remember watching Mick Jones when he was in the Groundhogs and I'm sure he had a single bass kit but a peddle he could use with both feet to produce that faster roll effect. He was rather good.

I'm not a drummer so I could be talking absolute rubbish but that was how I saw it at the time.

Now Rick. About the drummer in Kings X ......................... :)
