The Jelly Jam 2
 

Around noon today, I decided that I must have The Jelly Jam 2 as soon as possible and simply could not wait two days for it to be shipped to me by an internet music vendor. This is a rare occurrence since I'm usually very stingy and refuse to pay full price for any album, preferring instead to scavenge on eBay for months to years at a time. Having just moved to Akron, OH, I wasn't sure if there were any good places to buy non-mainstream music. After hitting a few stores with no luck, I returned to my apartment to consult the phone book for record store locations. For some reason, actually calling them to see if they had the album did not occur to me. I drove around some more, until I hit the jackpot at record store number 5, an odd establishment staffed by metal-heads selling an eclectic mix of strange trinkets in addition to music. They had a single copy, which I bought for an outrageous price.

Thankfully, the album is extremely good. In fact, if it wasn't for one bad pseudo-punk song, I'd call it a near perfect album. It's filled with great melodies, some excellent off-kilter guitar riffs, and Rod Morgenstein's unique, busy, cymbal-happy drumming. Their first album is one of my favorites, and I don't hesitate to say that this one is even better. Like their first album, we probably won't see it anytime on AM (a couple songs might fit though), but any fans of smart, melodic, hard rock should pick this one up.

I have heard just one Jam song, and it was decent. I'll have to put them on my list to get (which is like a scroll now).

Don't be so sure you may not hear them on the Moon at some point.....I'm sure Mr. Brainrock would fit it in!

One of the things I'm contemplating to fill in the EP time slot, for awhile, anyway, is to play "tweener" albums - those CDs that I've considered adding to the playlist but didn't quite make it - not because of quality, but because of "progginess" The Jelly Jam would be a candidate for that...

BTW. I still think Jelly Jam should be on AM. :D Progginess is as subjective as taste (DT thread), so I cite Enya and Wishbone Ash ;)

I was listening to their new album again today, and there's a ten second section in the last song that sound just like The Gates of Delirium. It must be prog!

Good call on Mozart, but AMB combines blugrass, gospel, and classical with a rock back-beat... prog?

I still feel Enya is WAY more progressive than Jelly Jam. Better? no. More complex? no. any other rational reason to say that? no. But to me, it FEELS more progressive. Sorry, but I can't change that.

Which song has the Gates Of Delirium "quote" in it - I missed that. I like the Jelly Jam a lot, but it's just well arranged straight rock to me. Not worse than Enya, just VERY different. I just don't want people chiming in that they like it better - I don't decide on whether to add things to AM based on if I like it - I TRY to be objective with an undefined definition of prog, if that makes any sense. Wishbone Ash was definitly a tweener that fell on the "add" side, so that's a pretty fair comparison. I'm pretty secure in most of my decisions, but I'm always open to opinions - if I'm on the fence, a well reasoned post may put it over the edge. Yikes! Did I say that out loud?
