And it's officially sticky, so it's officially not going anywhere.

And I'm working on it for all I'm worth, let me tell you!

I'm firmly of the belief that Ms. Spears is best enjoyed with the mute button engaged.

why....

is there a sticky on this thread?

Is there a relevance I am missing? Seems just like any other thread.

roger 10-02-2004 04:05 PM

well, following the recent requestmess, I thought that perhaps a thread that could offer alternative choices to some of the over-requested bands might be a good idea. RogerDot agreed, and there it was...
of course, the thread has veered quite a bit from it's original intent, so maybe it should be unstickied...

ivan_2068 10-02-2004 11:22 PM

If you like Genesis try Pendragon, Magenta and of course The Musical Box (Well, the last one is cheating).

In keeping with my long standing tradition (well, this is the third time I've done it, so that makes it a tradition, right?), I'd like to take the opportunity to yank this thread back to what it was intended to be.

But I'd like to do it with a twist.

I'd like to offer a challenge, a chance to vent one's opinions, if you will.

I'll start out the "if you like" part of the thread. Whoever wants to can fill in their opinion of the second half.

Having explained myself in far too many words, I'll take this opportunity to get to the point:

If you like IQ, you'll like ________
If you like Spock's Beard, you'll like ________
If you like Marillion, you'll like _______
If you like King Crimson, you'll like ________
If you like Mike Oldfield, you'll like _______

If anyone can think of any other groups they'd like concordence on, then by all means post away.

(I didn't bother with Genesis or Yes since those are the obvious ones, and I didn't bother with GY!BE or Don Cab since nobody in their right minds likes them anyway :P )

Roger -Dot- Lee, just joking, Spaz, just joking...

Yesspaz 10-02-2004 11:56 PM

If you like King Crimson, you'll like Anekdoten
If you like Mike Oldfield, you'll like Anthony Phillips
If you like GYBE!, you'll like A Silver Mt. Zion
If you like Don Caballero, you'll like Billy Mahonie

KeithieW 10-03-2004 09:07 AM

If you like Camel you'll like Sebastian Hardie

If you like GY!BE you'll like Having your toenails pulled out with red hot tweezers and pushed up your nose while you listen to a Billy Mahonie album and have Yesspaz scream in your ear. "IT IS GOOD, IT IS GOOD, IT IS GOOD!!!!"

Rick and Roll 10-03-2004 10:49 AM

my point...

As usual, Roger hits the nail on the head.

I guess I don't like to play along with these things. For instance, just because I like Marillion doesn't necessarily mean I like Iluvatar. I like Iluvatar because I do.

I should like IQ if I like the others? Hogwash. IQ to me is OK, not great.

Should I like Citizen Cain because they are a Genesis clone? Not a chance.

I think I was a bit taken back because I saw Tool compared with "early Stavesacre". I don't see it.

You may like the first two records a lot.

But the next two (especially Gravity) have drifted away from this comparison.

This is why I don't particularly like this thread.

Having said that, please allow me to recuse myself from it so that others may enjoy it.

If you like IQ, you'll like The Flower Kings
If you like Spock's Beard, you'll like The Flower Kings
If you like Marillion, you'll like The Flower Kings
If you like King Crimson, you'll like The Flower Kings
If you like Mike Oldfield, you'll like The Flower Kings

moses 10-04-2004 11:22 AM

(missing the irony entirely)

...But I don't like the Flower Kings very much!

I guess there's no accounting for taste.

The only thing I'll say in defense of this thread, Rick, is that it is geared towards listeners with significantly less knowledge than you. In that case, the Iluvatar/Marillion/Genesis comparison may be helpful. It's still up to each individual to make up their mind whether they like a band or not. And, like the "better than" threads, a lot of opinion is involved. But ultimately, if one new listener that hasn't heard of Iluvatar checks them out and likes them, then this thread has a lot of value. In my opinion...

agreed. Actually, my knowledge is abut average in comparison to most that listen to the Moon.

Unfortunately, I'm a devil's advocate in thought. If I'm told something sounds like another, I will resist. Just hardheaded.

When stated as you have Jim, it makes a lot of sense. I need to be more cognizant of what can be accompilshed even if it is flawed.

Sticky away!

maybe there's a rockumentary radio show in here somewhere....

Ooh, now THAT'S an idea. Rick: if you ever find yourself in need of show suggestions, there's an idea. Or perhaps a "If you like X you'll LOVE THIS" type of show.
