classical prog

after hearing Beethoven a number of times on AM, suddenly it hit me.

don't get me wrong ... I'm a big fan of classical, but if we're going to have classical on AM, why not put in some of the "prog" classical composers. If you've been reading about some of the influences of various well know prog artists already on the moon, then you'll probably recognize the names Stravinsky and Bartok. These guys wrote some awsome stuff, and there are a lot of others. Maybe just a dash or two ... these are some of the most open-minded listeners on the planet.

Well call me closed-minded. Sorry, but being this the sixth or seventh time it's come up, I have to again say I'm oppopsed to (more) classical on the Moon. I have hundreds of cds of classical and love it, but AM is a prog-rock station. Two qualifications: Progressive and Rock. Anything that falls into those categories, even barely is fine with me, as long as it's both. Progressive classical like Stravinsky is amazing, but it's not rock. Pure straight killer rock like Creedence Clearwater Revival is amazing, but not progressive. PROG and ROCK. If I want a classical streaming station, then Beethoven Radio is the place I'll go.

Sorry alians2, but you've got an opponent  :D. Welcome to the Moon though!:)

Let the debate begin (again).

alians2 12-09-2004 04:41 PM

so ... by your definition Beethoven is both prog and rock?

if not, then why is it on the MOON?

Yesspaz 12-09-2004 05:23 PM

No, by my definition, Beethoven is niether prog nor rock. It's on the Moon because I don't have anything to do with it :p

BTW, the "you have an enemy" is a joke, that's why I put the smilie face, in case you were offended. :D

alians2 12-09-2004 05:45 PM

I was not offended at all ... in fact

you and I are in perfect agreement, and certainly not enemies.

I consider Beethoven to be extremely boring and was attempting to raise a flag to the fact that a 20+ minute boring song was being played so frequently

unfortunately .... most of the classical stations don't play the good classical stuff either

ok .... let's switch gears ... how about Bill Nelson

hi alians...

I think we chatted about XTC...

I like the fact you think outside the straight prog definition.

I don't think classical is prog or non-prog, and I think if one tries to say it's not, you leave yourself open to defending other bands that are in the middle. It's a losing proposition. Roger Lee was railing on the Beatles not being prog, yet cited Phish which I think is far from prog. It's pointless, really.

Me, I just don't have the patience for classical. Isn't it funny how a genre of music all sounds the same to someone else who doesn't care for it? The most common complaint I hear about genres that one does not like is "it all sounds the same". That's code for "I don't like it".

All that being said, your argument about some classical on the Moon and some not is very sound. Good points about the other composers.

Classical is funny too, because I know people who like Southern Rock and Classical. It's funny that way.

alians2 12-10-2004 02:36 PM

I've conditioned myself over the years to come up with the response "it doesn't do anything for me" , when I want to talk about a particular band that I don't care to listen to

that's why I can find good stuff in just about any genre

If I'm listening to something, and I find myself all of a sudden having to stop and listen closer, and the experience is a positive one, then I have to say that it's good

that's why I'm listening to the MOON ... I can be knee deep into some really heavy programming, and a cool song will come up, and I've got to go over to the "what's playing window" and see who it is.

I want to hear new stuff, and I don't care if the words are in english, or if there are any words at all

I had a guy tell me years ago that there was no good music created after the 70's .... god ... that's really missing it

that's why, as you said, there's no point in arguing with someone, or trying to change their minds ... if the music doesn't do something for them ( cause a positive reaction in them), they'll never be convinced

..... so .... what do you think about Bill Nelson??
