What a sham!

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!

Now U-2 and the Pretenders!

I like early U-2 and the first few Pretenders records. But come on! Hall of Fame?

Chubby Checker is in with exactly TWO hits.

Freakin U-2. Who's next, Kurt Cobain?

Totally subjective.

Why am I ranting? Just a pre-emptive strike in case anyone mentions this farce of an organization again. :p

The Pretenders, Chubby Checker, yes, I agree. But don't EVEN knock U2. I just plunked down $107.25 to see them in Atlanta and it will be money well spent! The new album rules, U2 is the most deserving Hall of Fame candidate in years, and to quote Rick and Roll, "Freaking U-2!"

p.s. rick i never pay any attention to that HOF...it always goes well beyond me to figure some of the people they deem worthy and those they make wait or even overlook....besides it's only a measure of music for the masses—are we not DEVO?

No kidding.

Maybe we can meet up for some pre-show ribs and prog rock discussion. I'm sure I can pick up some pointers, and I'm sure I can deliver some as well.

When is it? And where?

Roger -Dot- Lee, won't be going to the show, just wanna pick a restaurant that's close.

isabella 03-18-2005 04:04 AM

U2?

Hi everybody,
good news:
in my hometown there is a small street ''via di san giuseppe dei porci'',
we dedicate to the great albums of U2!
It is like a street of fame!

translate:'via di san giuseppe dei porci'
is like Sant Joseph of the porcs street!

How are you Poda, I remember your kindly welcoming of ten days ago.

If it weren't for U2, Depeche Mode and REM, 80s music would have been merely bland. Instead, it was actively annoying. ;)

Geez, the 80s. What a musical wasteland.

Ok, I don't know Italian, so I'm going to guess that translates as "Where the Streets Have No Name?" Help me out!

When is it? And where?

Wherever the place that the Hawks play (drawing a blank). The show is November 18. 28,000 tickets - sold out in 25 minutes.

I'd be all for meeting and eating, but I'm with 7 other people (maybe more). My friend Mark was the ticket nabber, so he's kind of setting this thing up. He's seen U2 about a dozen times. This'll be my first. So he's running the show (less work for the rest of us, I say). So we may be carpooling, flying (quick cheap hop from the Ham), or whatnot. I.e. if I was on my own, or with one other person, sure. But we're eight singles, so I don't want to be like, "Hey, let's all go meet my friend Roger.Lee." I'm not saying it won't happen, but I'd have to see.

And yes, it would be cool to meet up.

Umm, if you don't like U2, that's fine. You know I'm not one to try and change people's opinions. But U2 has been putting out records for over 20 years, most of them good, several great (IMO); they've been politically active and vocal about various causes; they've been prolific without being overly repetitive; and they've had the same lineup the entire time. From the mid-80's to the late 90's, it would be hard to point to a band that approached their combination of popularity and critical praise. I consider them very worthy of "Hall of Fame" credentials.

Now Kurt Cobain, will probably make it someday, and that will piss ME off. I always thought of Nirvana as a garage band, and never understood the hype.

Spaz, I've seen U2 3 times, and I think you're going to like it...

I do like U2. A lot. (Although I blame them and REM for taking the guitar lead out of popular music).

Putting it in that light I can see their inclusion in this mythical hall of fame. It makes sense. Certainly better than "it freakin rocks":D

I guess I had a visceral reaction when I saw the article.

I originally read that as "...Nirvana as a garbage band" and thought "NOW you're talking!"

Personally, I think Kurt did the music world a LOT of good.

When he fellated a shotgun.

And I'm no fan of that screechy spunkbucket he was shacking up with either. Neither of them have the talent to be able to successfully scrape dog poop off of their shoes, let alone make music.

Then there was all the Angsters that tried to compare him with Jim Morrison. I ended up in the middle of many a flame war with that one.

No, deary, the only thing that Jim Morrison had in common with Cobain was that they both managed to off themselves. The differences were more profound: Jim could sing. Jim could write. Jim had TALENT. Cobain had none of them and the world is a better place without him. And if Jim heard that the likes of you were comparing him with Cobain, he'd probably tell you the same thing he told the producers at the Ed Sullivan Show."

Heh. That one sent more than one starry eyed fangirl into fits of nonsensical, spittle-flecked, foot-stomping, fist-shaking, impotent rage.

And nobody ever questioned what he said to the producers, either.

Roger -Dot- Lee, but he was a POET! *BLAM!*

I am no big fan of Nirvana, but that is the most uncalled for thing I've ever read on the boards here at AM. Praising a man's suicide is despicable. Roger, you should be ashamed of yourself.

I'm going to have to disagree on this one, mainly from my personal views on suicide -- a subject that we can discuss in private email if you're interested. I think you'll find that things aren't always as they appear, and this isn't really the place for this sort of discussion.

NB: it has nothing to do with his music.

Roger -Dot- Lee, that's all I'm going to state about it publicly.

Rick and Roll 03-21-2005 09:25 PM

Amazing....

how there has to be a Hall of Fame for a non-competitive unmeasurable thing like music. That's my beef. And it's in Cleveland!

Time to sleeeeeppppp.....

Not last I checked. :)

I graduated high school in the late 80s, so my prime teen years were at the dawn of MTV and the heart of the 80s. But I hated the music then and I hate it now. It wasn't until I got to college and discovered bands like The Who and Jethro Tull that I really got into popular music.

My two favorite 80s bands are Men Without Hats and Marillion.

you lost me on this one...you liking them is apparently the only thing in common between these two bands - save starting with the letter "M":D

(he doesn't like U2 or REM, likes Men W/O Hats...doubt I'll ever understand that one)

That would be Philips Arena. Let me know ahead of time. I'll show you how to get there via Marta and avoid the Typical Atlanta Traffic Zoo(TM) that occurs during shows and the like. Plus you'll save a bundle on Parking -- Zero vs. $15-20.

couldn't agree more. Let's just agree on topics to avoid (or keep the discussions civil), lest sparks fly, and we end up hobbling around places brandishing various pieces of furnature (picture a slow motion version of the Keystone Kops(TM))

Roger -Dot- Lee, so how IS the leg doing, anyway?
