Show 109 - Tears For Fears

Since I already alluded to the show in another thread, I'll just post the show theme now and do the song list later.

This week is a theme I love to do - bands that are too intelligent for mainstream pop yet not quite prog enough for regular airplay here.

I'll play 3-6 songs from The Hurting, The Seeds of Love, Elemental, Raoul and the Kings of Spain, and Everybody loves A Happy Ending.

I'll close the show with all of Songs From the Big Chair.

Next week is Yes, and then a break from full three-hour artist spotlights. Let's get some contrast within shows...

set list later!

As usual, the (relative) clean air of Vermont has heightened your intuitive senses. XTC is the perfect Tweener. I wonder how many of their songs have hit 6 minutes long....

That is an ever-present show idea since last year, and I did play all of Oranges and Lemons here once. I think what has held me back is that I only have the later CD's. My early XTC is missing or on vinyl. I wanted to do their material justice.

Andy Partidge has been doing a myspace blog weekly, parsing one song a week. It's great stuff. Add them if you can Roger, and read his stuff, it's great.

I just read his verbose Amazon interview, and am considering the nine (!) disc box set of demos he has out.

What a talent!

I love The Hurting. The college radio was playing it when I was working on my graduate degree. At least this album has a theme. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Primal_therapy

You should have picked a few from SftBC and all of The Hurting. At least have the common decency to censor Shout and Everybody Wants To Rule The World.

Rick you lovely little boy - Great with Tears - as you will see I have them all. But I will agree with Vax about selection.

Yes I do remember the hurting is a vax favorite...as Jim likes Elemental (I like that one and Seeds the best).

I am doing 7 of the 10 from Hurting...so that's a good %. I found it to be less proggy than the others.

I'd cut "Head Over Heels" before the other two. But you know it's only a few songs...and hey who has common decency anymore?

Great idea about the XTC Rogor...I'll keep that in mind. I have Big Express and then everything Skylarking through the Apple Venus CD's...

Shreikback actually had some proggy as well as psychedelic moments later in their career.

Glad to see you didn't cut Head over Heels as it's my favourite song from the album.

I remember that at the time of the original Live Aid gig, some of us in London, including me, did a 10km rum for charity. The theme song for that event was "Everybody wants to RUN the world" a remix of the song from SFtBC. It was a fantastic day out and raised a lot of money for the charity.

And yes I did finish the course. ;)

Looks like it's going to be a great show Rick.

I love this song...

Hide my head I want to drown my sorrow
No tomorrow, no tomorrow
And I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I'm dying
Are the best I've ever had

No Ideas as Opiates? Pivotal in the theme...

My daughter was Head Over Heels for TfF. We took her at about 3 yrs of age to a TfF gig at the Garden State Arts Center. They saw her in the audience (we were 2nd or 3rd row) and invited her up on the stage.
The guys in the monkey suits were a bit odd and over the top though.

Re: Show 109 - Tears For Fears

Funny, I was also going to mention "Ideas As Opiates" - great (though bizzare-ish) tune. "Head Over Heels" is probably my favorite from "Big Chair". "Shout" was probably their worst song ever, and overplayed to boot. But I'm certainly OK with differing opinions. I would have changed some selections from "Elemental", but there's not enough memory on the AM server to explain the sentimental meaning that album has for me. But any chance of including "Power"? :headscrat

And there's a few on "Saturnine and Martial Lunatic" (the outtakes album) that could have been included, but now we're splitting hairs.

I have many, though not all of XTC's older albums. Ask if you want some mp3's for a show...

I for one of many am looking forward to TFF...

Sounds like a good story over some wine sometime...

Maybe we can do a show in February on XTC, sounds good...
