Just bought a mastodon cd and can't decide what I think. Never been one for gutteral screaming, but some of the music is definately catchy. Would call them quite heavy for my tastes and can't figure out or know if i want to figure out their "message". It felt like an explosion but afterwards I felt good. anyone checked them out? I have bloodmoon. I'd call it progressive heavy metal. any thoughts?

Hi Paw,

I'm what you could call a Mastodon fan (I own Leviathan and Bloodmountain, both excellent). I'd call them progressive in the sense that they're able to fuse pretty much every genre of extreme and semi-extreme metal at once, but maybe not prog in the traditionnal sense.

As for their message, the Leviathan album is a concept one about Moby Dick and Blood Mountain is about climbing and survival in the wild mountains, or something like that.

A good band... if you like very Heavy metal.
