Steely Dan

These guys might not be exactly what you would call Prog, but they're a nice blend of Jazz, Pop, and Blues. They really defy categorization.

Re: Steely Dan

I know some may shoot me down for this but I agree in the name of good music.

Not only some great tunes that will stand the test of time but also lyrics for the thinking people.

Furthermore, some great playing and the cleverest of song writing.

Re: Steely Dan

I won't shoot you down, The Dan rocks (or should that be grooves?). Not prog, but great music nonetheless, I think Fagan has called it fake fake jazz :).

i love Steely DAN (becker & fagan a force to be wreckoned!)! from start to fini. and have all their works and fagans solo projects too (MORPH THE CAT is great stuff as was Nightfly & Kamakiriad) and rick as usual you pick one of my picks...the title track great lyrics....donald f is a genius in my book!

but even with that said a special show gets my vote, but no Dan on the moon gm...sorry.

I don't remember how many times I've seen them live, but they are great.
Just last summer I saw them at Jones Beach Theater up here on L.I.
Michael McDonald joined them after he opened the show.
Don't miss the show!

Kid Charlemagne for sure. I saw an interview with Larry Carlton where he said he did that solo in one take!
Aja: Another great one. Steve Gadd's Grammy winning drum work on that tune is unbelievable.
I agree Caves of Altamira: great
Actually there are very few SD songs that I wouldn't listen to over and over.
BTW: Larry Carlton would be a great artist for the Moons' collection.

Carlton's Kid Charlemagne solo is one of the few solos I've bothered to learn note for note, one of the greats to be sure. But as for favorites, I dunno, I like (and own) them all, in fact I've really liked the last two records quite well, so maybe they are my current favorites just because they are still newer to me, but that opinion could change when the wind changes direction ;)

Re: Steely Dan

I've heard that the lead on Kid C is considered one of the greatest....

ok I'll do one, maybe June.....

I may set it up like the Saga show, where i just put the entire set list in sentence form....there could be fun stories about Fezzes and Gold Teeth...

The Dan rules. They are so prog, they don't even know it.

You can count me as a Fan of the Dan...and it's hard to pick a favorite. I like the Scam, Katy, Aja, Gaucho, but Countdown is an all-time classic! I've said before that the Dan may not be prog, but certainly progressive!

Well you know what; If Super Tramp and Mike Oldfield are considered Prog (which they play on the Moon all the time), then Steely Dan surely has to be.
Don't get me wrong ST and MO fans, there's nothing wrong with them, but IMHO they are more closer to Pop.
BTW: Ther is a whole host of Jazz Fusion on this site which I definitley love: RTF, Al D., Jean Luc etc.

I would never ask for Steely Dan to be included on the Moon. I will gladly do a show, but it's really not something that's entirely appropriate for Aural Moon. Agreed, there are a lot of bands I consider just plain rock (Queen, Rush, Hawkwind) that are here.

Not everyone can be pleased 100%, but Jim does a great job of arbitrating what goes on the Moon. That's why I will play music that may not be easily approvable (my Zep show, blocks of Iron Maiden, Tool) but never push for inclusion (although I firmly state that Metal does not mean non-prog).

The only beef I ever have is excluding selected tracks. Take the aforementioned Supertramp. I don't agree that "Give A Little Bit" should be excluded...so what it's overplayed - it's a great song. Jadis for instance is more pop consistently than that song. But again, it's really hard to say "this band is on so this shouldn't either". And I can always play it myself at home.

I don't care for the Strawbs, and think they're not prog (and yes I know it's not a popular opinion) but I'd never ask for removal, or inclusion of Fairport Convention.

Jazz fusion (maybe my favorite genre) is a tough call. There are many more artists that could be added, but the genre is so overloaded, so we only have the big names.

As usual, I've become so long-winded I lost my train of thought.... :haha: :dunno:

No that wasn't overwinded at all.
Thanx Rick
