Prog with sound effects/ use of studio
 

I asked this over at Prog Archives but the kiddies weren't of much help. I would like to know what albums make use of the studio and have good sound effects. Some obvious examples include Pink Floyd's "dark side of the moon," King Crimson's "lark's tongues in aspic," and Yes's "fragile." "Close to the edge"(also by Yes for those of you brand new to prog) is another one(for the opening and closing section of the title track). Can anyone give me some lesser known examples? It could be anything from nature sounds to a animal sounds to just about anything as long as it has music and isn't just sounds put the together with no music(ie revolution 9). Thanks.

The sound of the waves in Rush's Natural Science from Permanent Waves was done by placing a microphone on the shore of a lake in Morin Heights Quebec and bouncing the wave sounds off a cliff face on the far side of the lake.

You mentioned DSOTM Mike, but Water's solo stuff has even more Musique concrète stuff mixed in, I think my fave Water's solo stuff is Amused To Death, it's on the Moon.

Machiavel eponym LP begins with the recorded noise of someone filling a glass of beer from a keg :-) (they and I are belgian don't forget it ! )

You are right. I'm not familiar with that one but not too long ago heard Pros and Cons.. and Radio Kaos and they both have lots of sounds on them especially the latter.

Marillion's Brave was chock full of sounds the band recorded for the album specifically and from aspects of their lives.

The album was recorded in a castle in France -- Chateau Marouatte -- adding a natural atmosphere to the sound that wouldn't be realized in studio. This work is full of sound textures: water lapping at the shoreline, police radio calls, sirens, first cries of Rothery's own child, trains, subways, printing presses, a splashing dive in an underground cave lake, traffic noises from streets, the clamour of people in shops, and even a real Uillean Pipes player... and so much more. These sounds are both obvious and subtly mixed throughout the work.

Marillion have used sampled sounds in other works since Brave and Mark Kelly masterfully conjures them up with his keyboards when they play live.

10CC's One night in Paris from their LP 'Original Soundtrack ' begins with old car hoots and toots , bike bell beeps, french people speaking english with a strong local accent, all these features are evoking the atmosphere of La Belle époque

YES had a few:

Close to the edge - birds
Southside Of The Sky - the footsteps at the end and the wind at the beginning.
Release, Release - the fake audience noise

The Appleseed Cast - "A Tree for Trials/Convict" has the sound of rustling leaves.

not prog, but Journey's "Line of Fire" has a 12-gauge.

Flamborough Head ( Dutch neo prog band) their first cd begins with sample of little children playing in a playground in a kindergarten

Here are a few more:

Hawkwind's Spirit of The Age features shortwave tuning, Morse code and the Albanian national anthem.

Be Bop Deluxe's Modern Music Suite begins with BBC broadcast excerpts.

Caravan's Golf Girl incorporates Morse Code.

A car horn is heard in Don't Take Love For Granted from Yes's Magnification.

Many Bill Nelson recordings feature "found voices" that Bill recorded himself from TV, Radio and Film.

Holger Czukay (Can) extensively used shortwave broadcasts in his solo work.

A phantom numbers shortwave broadcast appears at the end of Even Less from Porcupine Tree's Stupid Dream.

Ambrosia (self-titled 1975 and Somewhere I've Never Travelled 1976) made very tasteful use of this technique. Dream Academy (A Different Kind of Weather, produced by David Gilmour), although not prog(but a nice listen) also uses this quite a bit (to the point of sounding like a Pink Floyd album in places). Was also done by Supertramp on at least a couple of albums. Also Jellyfish (my favorite Beatles-sounding non-prog band), Santana's "Caravanserai", and on the best sounding, best produced, tightest in-the groove-bass-playing, best meaningful lyrics (but non-prog) album you might ever find in a bargain bin, Toy Matinee!

This was a great question, and would make a cool theme.

Also, "Tearing in My Heart" by Sunny Day Real Estate has kids playing, as does "He" by Jars of Clay.

There is also Alan Parsons. His 'On Air' cd is full of sounds of airplanes, birds, and the launching of a space shuttle. Very nice music also. If you can, get the DTS version. Excellent!

Kansas uses a hammer and anvil on "On The Other Side" from the Monolith album. It comes during an instrumental section after the second verse and is pretty much used as an instrument. In concert Robbie Steinhardt (original violinist) "played" it, I don't know who did in the studio.
