Find it a bit strange there is no Dire Straits on here. We can argue about what is and isn't prog, but they're AS proggy as Rush, at least.

Maybe one Dire Straits song is really prog : "Telegraph road" and a very long one !

I forget which song it was, but the one that was used on West Wing at the end of the season when Bartlett announced his re-election campaign was an awesome epic like piece.

But I wouldn't call all of their work in that same vain.

But I have most of it too. :)

If you want me to help you out a bit...there two albums, Making Movies and Telegraph Road are probably their proggiest.

Well like i said, I didn't mean to open up the "what is prog" Can of Worms.

But I'd argue that Telegraph Road, Private Investigator, Tunnel of Love, Ride Across The River, Why Worry, at the very least, fit on here as much as Working Man or Fly by Night or Tom Sawyer and Limelight.

I have Brothers in Arms, but none else, so let me amend my above comment to say that while I think they're fantastic musicians, that album's not proggy. Don't know about others.

Here's what I can contribute to this thread.

I first heard Dire Straits in Schenectady while a freshman in college. At this point in time, progressive rock Act I was complete, disco was at its peak, new wave had taken hold, and punk was still very strong. What I recall from that time is the so called experts made a big fuss over simpler rock music like Rockpile and Nick Lowe as examples. A really dizzying time.

I bought Dire Straits debut album in 1979 just before Communique was released, primarily on the strength of Sultans of Swing, but that whole album to me is incredible and I like all tracks fairly the same. From that point on I was hooked on this band and is one of the staples of my personal collection. Making Movies was mentioned earlier. I remember this album being criticized because it was too different. Telegraph Road? fuggedabouddit.

For trivia, listen to Ian Anderson sing on Crest of a Knave. You will find him doing an excellent impersonation of Mark Knoepfler.

Dire Straits music was progressive in a sense of moving music forward and being fresh and different in the day, and I believe it will easily withstand the test of time. Is it material to be included in the AM library is another matter for Jim to decide. Either way was is fine with me.

I'm no Dire Straits fan and have nothing. I won't argue against a majority but it's not prog in my ears. No vote from me

Brothers in Arms was probably their most successful and also commercial album. If you didn't know who Dire Straits was before this album, you probably knew you wanted your MTV.

As much as I love this band, I've decided it is really too much of a stretch to fit here.
