Allman Brothers Band
I think songs like Jessica (which you have played by Dixie Dregs), In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, etc.. will be good additions to the playlist.

True, but if there is Santana & Phish in the playlist maybe there's room for ABB. And actually, I think Phish's most "almost prog" album is Junta and it's not on the playlist.

Re: Allman Brothers Band
If The Allman Brothers Band are welcome I can mention some other long tracks from Outlaws, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Blackfoot, Black Oak Arkansas, Marshall Tucker's Band, Atlanta Rhythm Section, Sea Level, .... but it's all SOUTHERN ROCK or COUNTRY ROCK.
Santana is LATIN ROCK. Phish has some songs with prog parts but it's also more SOUTHERN ROCK, BLUES and COUNTRY. |
Re: Allman Brothers Band
But I'm not saying that they should be included just because their long songs. They also use "exotic, complex, whatever..." chords and scales and odd meters.

Re: Allman Brothers Band
i understand where trili is coming from it's there AM needs an "Almost Prog" section

Re: Allman Brothers Band
It's always challenging for the borderline bands. I can offer no better than criteria then "if it sounds prog enough to my ears I add it". Very subjective obviously, probably inconsistent as well. But that's the way it is.
Suggestions are ALWAYS welcomed, even if I don't act on them. Allman Bros is not a bad suggestion as I've considered them multiple times, but something about their sound is too bluesy or something to be prog. To MY ears, and let me emphasize that this is NOT a bad thing. I am a very big Allman Brothers fan and have a bunch of their music. Sounds like some Allman tracks could find a one time home in a certain corner of the Mooniverse... |
Re: Allman Brothers Band
well for what it's worth, i indeed like the allman bros and agree with jims ears on their sound. i think that the slope they rest on, however, is a slippery one and would rather not traverse it.
of course it's all up to you jim poda p.s. i do own their complete works...just so ya know. |
Re: Allman Brothers Band
One reviewer said that Duane Allman was the only person he'd ever heard who could solo over a one-chord vamp for half an hour, and not only not bore you, but leave you absolutely riveted. He asked him how he did it, and Duane said, "That kind of playing comes from listening to Miles Davis's 'Kind of Blue.' I've listened to it so much in the past few years I've hardly listened to anything else."
That tid-bit is from the liner notes for "Kind of Blue," some reissue or other. |
Re: Allman Brothers Band
For the record, I'm all about individual tracks if the whole album doesn't fit. Just for the record. :D

Re: Allman Brothers Band
That rule of thumb should also be Ten Years After, Gov't Mule ...
Would not be bad. :yougo Greetings from Barcelona |
