Where psych meets prog
What albums do you consider to be a meeting ground between psychedelic and prog? If they're obscure what makes them special or stand out? They don't have to be old but I'm not looking for a list every album ever made that falls into this category just ones you think are significant in some way.

One word: Rovo. Check out the genre tags on their wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rovo - You'll find a lot of stuff that fits that description by checking out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...c_rock_artists and then doing a little sampling on amazon.com.
My second thought is "What is your definition of psych music?" because LOTS of bands with different sounds are called psych. |
Re: Where psych meets prog
Spaz, everyone has their own definition of psych just like everyone has their own definition of prog. This is about what you guys think. I just provided the topic. I don't want to answer my own question. :D

Hypnos 69 has made quite a few albums. "Legacy", their latest, is an excellent example.

Mike, Diabolus' High Tones from the early 70's, maybe 71, is definitely a decent psych/prog record. The early psych vibe on this album can't be attained today. That special authentic psychadelic sound is mixed with a proto prog sound. In my opinion, it's one of the few albums from that era that succeed with that type of mix.

Re: Where psych meets prog
According to my search on both gnosis and progarchives there is only one prog band called Diabolus and they put out one self titled prog album around 71/72(the date varies depending on the source).

Re: Where psych meets prog
I don't like Psycho that much, but there are these 2 LP that I like very much and that are sometimes classed (by others) as Psycho:

Re: Where psych meets prog
I like Ash Ra Tempel. That's a good one. I don't know the Cosmic Jokers though. There's also Amon Duul 2 and Can. Pink Floyd and Gong aren't german but they are worth mentioning too. For post seventies bands there are of course Ozric Tentacles, Porcupine Tree(early), Djam Karet and several others.
All the bands I mentioned in this post are pretty essential if you like this kind of music. |
