Flower Kings advice

I have heard about five or six Flower Kings tunes here at AM, and I have decided I need to investigate them further (with a purchase). I need some advice from whoever here has some experience with the Flower Kings and can make a recommendation.

I try to track the tunes I've heard and liked so I can better make this kind of decision. The two tunes I liked best were "Devil's Playground" off Unfold the Future and "The Melting Pot" from Retropolis. Can anyone recommend either or perhaps some other album as the best Flower King release for a first-timer?

- you should be redirected to the official website.
there's some live performance clips.

i asked the same q at yesfans

i did a search, found 9-10 snippets at the
barnes and noble site.

also, if you haven't checked out porcupine tree's
"in absentia", it's worth a listen.

let us know what you find.

well Matt

The two you mentioned are rather obscure and middle of the road for me, but as is my wont, I'll offer my opinion.

The Flower King (just Roine) is real good, very diverse between cuts.

Retropolis is more dark & melodic, especially the beautiful "There is more to this world".

Back In The World of adventures is a must have.

Stardust We Are is my favorite.

Flowerpower is too long, but has some really good stuff on it.

I don't have the live record, but I generally don't do too many of those.

Space Revolver is back to the single disc, but I think it's awesome.

Rainmaker has the Unfold lineup, and I love it. Unfold is more jazzy.

recommended to me also
when i asked if they had a "fragile".

i'm picking that up in a couple of days.

I never liked Flower Kings at all, until I heard Unfold. Saw them live in Aug 2002, but was unimpressed. Don't know if I have changed or they have changed, probably the former. Nevertheless, I guess Rainmaker is the next to pick up, although it got quite negative reviews.

Unfold The Future is pretty decent. I really like The Truth Will Set You Free...maybe that is the only track I enjoy from the album!
