I've never looked it up. That was by ear. I think the first time the phrase was used of music was that a British reviewer describe Jimi Hendrix's music as the sound of heavy metal falling from the sky. I heard that from some guy somewhere, don't know it it's true or not, but the timing would be correct - 1968-ish.
