And, if you read the fine print, there are no such things as independents when it comes to peerformance royalties. SoundExchange owns the rights for ALL perfomance recording (though I don't understand why and how, but they do). Even artists not signed with an RIAA label. Because, "they could someday do so".
Nobody yet knows what kind of waiver is necessary. The artist has to tell SoundExchange that they waive the royalties, but this is not obvious how to do this.
Come July 15, I don't think you/we/prog stations will have too many artists to play, even if they WANT to be played. That's the whole sad part. The artists themselves might not even be in control, and they don't know it. Thus, this demonstration to draw attention to this.
