But I need to know a good place to hire mobile phones and a good carrier and a good deal as well. Usually the Airports have a place you can hire mobile phones go through all that sort of stuff. As Heathrow or Luton is the one I don't know yet. But I'd like to get your ideas
I have a phone for the UK. You go to one of the many Vodaphone stores, get a new SIM card (~£5) and a card you then use to top up call time (which you can do most anywhere as top up kiosks are as ubiquitous as Starbucks coffee shops in the UK). If you can tell me when you are planning your visit, I could see to it that you get my phone for use. I've lent it out to many people in the past.

I know there is a Vodaphone shop near Tottenham Court station in London that I've used. There was, IIRC, one along Victoria Street too. Also, Paddington and Victoria Stations may have a Vodaphone store. I'm not much for the phone (Martha insisted on it) so such things don't really lodge themselves into my memory banks. Now, if you could do your phone business in pubs I'd be able to direct you to plenty of establishments.

I travel with my Powerbook and wireless hot-spots are also ubiquitous in the UK. I stay connected that way. I don't like phones. If you have a laptop and you want to stay in touch with the folks at home, that may be the better option considering the time zone differential.
