Mountain
Black Sabbath
Zeppelin
Santana for a little latin flavor
The Doors
Deep Purple (Live in Japan has an inspiring solo)

That should help out. Then work him into Iron Maiden, Maybe some Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Robin Trower.
