Have him check out some of Mickey Hart's Planet Drum Cd's. Supralingua is a good start. Have him break down the seperate drum parts individualy and play each one. Great excercise for the ear as well as delving into different styles. If he is learning by ear this will give him a challenge. If he is going for Speed tell him to get the instructional Dvd's from The Drummer'(s) from Slayer & Slipknot. Woohoo loads of fun there. Marco Minneman has a great Instructional Dvd out as well as what's his name? Bruford. lol. Volume control will be the hardest for him to learn.
