José Cid back to rock

"I was tired of making ballads." That's how José Cid put it in one of the various interviews he gave on his newly released record: "Menino Prodígio". Even if still in the pop vein, this is the first rock LP the Portuguese musician puts out since, well, "10 000 Anos Depois Entre Vénus E Marte". Although mostly composed by new material, this record also features tracks from Cid's early carer that were censored by the Fascist regime.

The LP was recorded in Cid's private studio, into which, according to legend, no computer has ever entered. In contrast to the piano lead compositions that marked his pop carer, this record is founded on a drum, electric bass, electric guitar trio, over which Cid sings, plays the Hammond and adds synthesisers.

José Cid's re-approach to rock music began last year after the contract with his previous record label expired. He took the time and effort to assemble a septet of musicians and singers to perform live for the first time ever the mythical "10 000 Anos Depois ..." LP, 36 years after the original release. One of the six concerts performed last year should be released as a DVD throughout this year.

The "10 000 Anos Depois ..." LP will be performed live again in the Roman ruins of Conímbriga on the 11th of July. Steve Hackett has been touted by the local press as a guest appearance in this concert (Hackett shall perform with the "Old Genesis Project" the following day at the ruins in any case).

José Cid has also hinted to the press that we will finally record "Vozes do Além", a progressive rock album on which he has been working on-and-off for several years. At the age of 73 this return to progressive music would be most welcome.
