Splitting of songs
The "Overrequested long song" issue has reminded me that there is a problem of songs that tie together but are split for airplay here.
Seems that an artist can make a long tune and it can be included in whole (or in the case of the two Tull epics, one side each). In fact, a tour-de-force can be constructed of semi-related parts. Examples of this are the Oldfield pieces or ones such as the hour long piece by that bass player about water on the moon (can't recall his name at the moment). What gets forgotten is that some songs are meant to be together but are split for airplay. I think the reason is that the songs aren't familiar to who is adding it. I know there are technical reasons, but a little carefulness and research would fix the problem. Here's an example: on the Sonus Umbra "Snapshots From Limbo" CD, the last piece is called "Insects". It's split into three parts, each about 3-5 minutes. It is meant both lyrically and musically to be as one. I really like the cut, but have not requested this because having one of the three parts play lessens the experience of the song, and really doesn't make sense. What is confusing to me is that Rush's "Fountain of Lamneth" is one piece on the Moon, yet is split exactly like the Sonus Umbra. It may be as one because we all know Rush. I'm sure there are other examples, but I can only think of a few without consulting the playlist. Mister Class and Quality/Three friends by Gentle Giant may also be one (that's marginal). The other one that comes to mind (if it's still split) is a Discipline tune that is inexpliciably split in half. It's one song but is carved in two. Seems unfair if Oldfield can have it all as one. Any thoughts? |

I know we really try and rip all of the long pieces together logically, but sometimes we just miss it because of the volume of releases we're broadcasting. If you notice something like that in the future, bring it to our attention.
As far as "Water on the Moon", the original release was just one big track, and we never had the time to split it up. Since then, Mark Howard has released a version with tracks, so we'll put that on the list to rerip as tracks. |

I can do that.
THe reason Sonus Umbra and Discipline are split is because that's how the CD was fabricated. That Discipline song is two tracks, even if there is no silence between them. Ditto the Sonus Umbra (3 tracks). Rush's "Fountain.." is one track on the CD. Because of the volume of CDs I rip, I don't always sit and think about the tracking. I can combine multiple tracks into one, but it's an extra couple of steps. When I'm aware that that should be done, I do. So, post away and I'll make it so. Unless I disagree. But you're right about the Discipline. I'll have to check the Sonus Umbra, haven't listened to that lately... |

Keithie's 2 pence worth........
I remember asking Jim to pull together the 4 parts of the 4 Moments track by Sebasian Hardie and to my delight he did. It works so much better that way. Unfortunately some listeners out there agreed with me and for a while it got requested on a daily basis and seems to have upset a few of the regulars. This appears to have died down now and I haven't heard it in a while.
This seems to be the way of things. Songs will get hammered for a week or so and then drift back into "obscurity". Still that's going off topic a bit (as I'm prone to do after a couple of bottles of Claret) so I'd better get back to what I was going to say in the first place. The Album "Revolutions" by 'Magenta' is a set of 4 separate suites that, on the CDs have been split into a multitude of tracks some of which are amazingly short. Split up like this the music doesn't flow at all well in places and I was hoping that they could be re-ripped as the 4 suites. In view of the current Oldfield discussions I can understand if you are reluctant to do so but I thought I'd mention it. |

Not that it makes any difference as to what needs or doesn't need to be done, but I think Rick is on to something about familiarity. Notice that "Endless Dream" is 3 tracks on the cd, but one track on AM. I'm betting that the ripper (Avian? Jim?)of this put them together because he knew in advance that this was really one track, whereas the Discipline may haven't as been as familiar at the time.

IQ splits of Subterranea
just adding my two cents in...but could we get a better break up of this wonderful piece of music...possibly 2 parts it's all broken up into bits and pieces...i leave it to your ears to discern a good break Jim.

I would be grateful if you could glue together three parts of Mostly Autumn's Pass The Clock epic. It definitely sounds better as a three piece whole, whole which is not very long in fact (about 12 mins). As it is split it doesn't sound so good.
Thanks in advance. ![]()

a reminder
about the Sonus Umbra, Jim, if you could fuse those three parts together sometime.
I realized that there was already a thread a fewmonths back on this, my apologies on making another one. |

Alan Parsons' "Fall of the House of Usher" should be reunited. I know the CD issue split 'em apart, but my brain short-circuits listening to one part without also hearing the others.
Same for Ten Jinn's "...darkling plain". However, I remember a similar discussion re Genesis' Lamb... BTW, has anyone else seen The Musical Box perform? I saw the "Selling" tour last year and will see "Lamb" this fall. Worthwhile! http://www.themusicalbox.net/ |
