Rickter Scale Show 150 - Three from 2007

airing Sunday, October 7 from 8-11 PM EST and Monday, October 8 from 1-4 PM EST

Show 150, a nice round number...I was going to play a bunch of favorites, a true mixed bag - but on Monday two discs arrived unexpectedly in the mail (I had forgotten about these). Jack Foster III and Stefan Fredin (of Trettioriga Kriget) each sent me their new discs. So I decided to match them with the Flower Kings' new one and make it a 2007 show. And it's only appropriate. What better way to celebrate a milestone of sorts with music from a great independent artist, a venerable prog band, and the band generally credited with ushering in the Progressive renaissance.

Jack Foster III - Tame Until Hungry

No Tears Left For Cryin'
The Solution
Civilized Dog
One Dark Angel
Mourning Glory
Bloodstone
Broken Hallelujah
Heart And Mind
Inside My Mind
Limbo And Flux
Rainbow Asylum
Every Time We Say Goodbye

Jack's third disc continues the solid work on the previous "Raptorgnosis". He's now released three great discs, each embellished with the stellar work of Trent Gardner (keys and backing vocals) and Robert Berry (drums and bass). They also co-write a lot of the music and the music is true collaboration. Jack also has a strong lyric writing partner on some of the songs, Melanie Myers. Finally, Jack's guitar is front and center and never in better form, and I'm a big fan of his vocal - I've not heard such tone since Greg Lake.

I won't tell too much of the always meticulous liner notes - you'll have to buy the CD! I will say the end of the first track quotes Steve Miller, who not only granted permission for the lyric, but gave encouragement to the project. Note that the last word sung in track one is the title of Track 2.

My favorite track, both lyrically and musically, is "Broken Hallelujah".

Crossing a lot of musical styles, this one's a must have - and there's a nice dedication to the "Moon buds" who he says were his first fan base.

Trettioariga Kriget - I Borjan Och Slujet

I Krigets Tid I
Barndom
Ungdom
Ungdom II
Benke
Lovsang
Oknen
S-bahn
Floden
Ryattaren
I Borjan Och Slujet
I Krigets Tid II

That's a lot easier to write than say!

I've been playing these guys a lot, and although I like to mix things up a bit, I couldn't pass up the chance to play this one. I'm only halfway through it so we'll listen together. I'm overwhelmed by the kindness of the Swedish bands (TK, Violent Silence, Beardfish et al) and the fantastic music they put out.

The Flower Kings - The Sum of No Evil

One More Time
Love Is The Only Answer
Trading My Soul
The Sum Of No Reason

Four of the six songs off of the new one, yet another long, solid record. Eleven records since 1994, plus all of the other music Roine Stolt writes. An amazing person. And of course, more stellar musicianship from the most talented band around.

Had to cut about 18 minutes (the last two tracks) for time considerations.

I'm ready to have this flower's petals plucked since it's been added to the station. The Sum of too much TFK I suppose.

It will pass. Give it a week or so and something else will replace it. I listen infrequently so I'm not privy to what is overrequested, I'm assuming it's been hit hard since it was added.

It's just a play of the new one on the show, as it was meant to be. I know I won't be requesting it

Just meant a full play (hearing all of the songs) of a CD (or in this case, 2/3 of the songs, or 4/5 of the running time).
