Show 12 - "Favorites"
This one contains a few of my very very bestest favorite tunes. Look for the rest of them sometime in January.
The order is not illustrative of any ranking..... Hit it! 1) Frankenstein - Edgar Winter Group This one's been covered more times than I can count. For some reason, the weird keyboards in the middle always hurt my ears.. sort of like going down a big hill. 2) Gentle Giant - In A Glass House The first section reminds me of sailing across the ocean. Then it's all power. All things Giant in one piece. 3) Ambrosia - Holdin' On To Yesterday When I was a young teen and this came out, I thought nothing of it. As my musical boundaries grew, and there was no one to rib me for listening to non-metal, it dawned on me how sad and beautiful this tune is. 4) Focus - Hocus Pocus A classic. Simple, yet full of energy. 5) FM - Seventh Heaven Layers of keys wash this song clean into the mind. The harmony between Ben Mink's violin and Cameron Hawkins' keys are phenomenal. 6) Robin Trower - Daydream This is the live version, where you can hear the drum kit rattle during the solo. Trower wrings out every last drop from the notes. Combined with the underrated James Dewar, the soul in this one is unmistakable. 7) Jethro Tull - Minstrel In The Gallery Two parts, one acoustic, one electric. Almost exactly the same, like listening to the same tune twice, but amazing how Ian Anderson pulls it off. The first encore I ever saw. 8) King Crimson - Discipline I did a write-up once on how this record is the best prog record ever. When this came out it was nothing like anyone had ever heard. Such intricacy and simplicity rolled into one song. 9) Heart - Love Alive One of the cleanest songs I've ever heard. It has such feeling. 10) Discipline - Canto IV (Limbo) I feel the same about this record as I do KC's Discipline. This song is unbelievable. I wish they were more popular, because seeing this live made my skin tingle. 11) Steve Tibbets - Ur Not a long song, and it seems more could have been done with it. But such a different feel, and the last 90 seconds of the the song is rapture. 12) King's X - We Are Finding Who We Are, It's Love I couldn't split this up, as it seems Heatbreaker and We Will Rock You never are split from the following tunes. It's a good thing, because the two faces of King's X are evident here. I realize that the number of Kx non-fans may outweigh the supporters, but these two tunes are more than outstanding. 13) Yes - Siberian Khatru How to pick a favorite Yes tune? It's not easy. I'm a big Squire fan, and it seems this has his fingerprints all over it. This one NEVER gets stale. 14) Elton John - Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding One of the first songs I ever took to. Elton was a big part of my musical upbringing, along with funk and hard rock. 15) Marillion - Incubus A neat lyrical idea, a killer solo, a dynamic powerhouse of a song. 16) Spock's Beard - The Doorway As with a lot of Morse tunes, he can overdo it a bit with the repeating themes. He likes to repeat themes in different musical styles within the same tune. But lord have mercy what a sweet tune! 17) Sugarloaf - Green-Eyed Lady When I first got to the Moon, this song was the centerpiece of an unintended firestorm. I responded to a thread, might have been "favorite song"...Jim thought I was kidding, I took it the wrong way and had a nasty line for him that I will only discuss over a few beers at Rosfest ![]() 18) Flower Kings - Stardust We Are This may be the most well-written song (except for a few Kansas ones) I've ever heard. Another one where seeing it live was devastating. 19) Rush - Xanadu Rush was the thinking man's heavy rock band in high school for me. Everyone loved Rush. This song threw them into a whole different area...and expanded the sound. 20) The Musical Box - Genesis Probably the one tune by Genesis that pulls together everything they were about. I'll be ready to chat and hear your ideas and favorites during the show.....enjoy! |

Listening, Rick. Can't do black or white.
I didn't know Musical Box was your fave Genesis tune. Can't remember if you're going to see "The Musical Box" do the Lamb on the current tour, but if you are, you'll be pleasantly surprised by the encore. Their strongest tune, prob because they must play it after every show. Thanks for the shows...every one different, all enjoyable. m |
