Show 16 - Fusion 1/9 & 1/10

Yes it's another fusion show! This one should make the hair stand up on your neck (or back ).

Two full CD's this time.

1) Return To Forever - Theme From The Mothership

Bill Connors, Lenny White, Stanley Clarke, Chick Corea. Enough said.

2) Rare Blend - Blue Diamond

Saw them with only 30 people attending. Life isn't fair.

3) Network - Dennis The Menace

Mr. Wilson! It's getting funky in here!

4) Kenso - The Signification of Time

Listening to Kenso one tune at a time, gearing up for Nearfest.

5) McHacek - Gnade

A wizard in the Holdsworth vein, check him out.

6) Fontanelle - Style Drift

Some electronica mixed in. Get ready to dance.

7) Nova - Driftwood

Narada Michael Walden and friends with a lush ten minute tune.

8 - 14) Mark Varney Project - Centrifugal Funk

Actual Proof
So What
Hey Tee Bone
Tokyo Blue
Splatch
Elegant People
Lane's Blitz
Love Struck

This one is a real wankfest. T.J. Helmerich, Frank Gambale, Brett Garsed, and Shawn Lane provide the axe work. Don't blink during "Lane's Blitz", you may miss it! Jimmy Earl on bass and Joey Heredia on drums provide a great base to work with. A bit more fuller than the other fine release "Truth In Shredding".

15 - 22) Jordan Rudess - Rhythm of Time

Time Crunch
Screaming Head
Insectsamongus
Beyond Tomorrow
Bar Hopping With Mr. Picky
What Four
Ra
Tear Before The Rain

Bass - Dave LaRue
Drums - Rod Morgenstein
Guitar - Daniel J.
Vocals - Kip Winger
Guitar - Vinnie Moore (1,7)
Joe Satriani (2,3)
Greg Howe (4,6)
Steve Morse (5)

Released in 2004, Fremder(99) turned me onto this. he sends me an email, and warns "will set the smoke detectors off". I play it, and unbelieveably, they did! I'd like to credit the song, but I think my wife's sweet potatoes in the oven were the reason. I mean, marshmellows aren't supposed to be black, are they?

Then, I stop in at my friend's place to get some music (Chris Lamka, Of Sound Mind, www.osmind.com - shameless plug!) and he's playing this. Too many coincidences....so I have to play it!

(other past weird occurrences - 1) listening to Black Dog in a car with friends in high school and having a big black dog run up to the car window...2) Poda and I at the exact same time posting the exact 8 words from a Cars tune in the black box)

Play loud!

tell me about Nova, Poda. I have an old Nova lp somwhere, can't remember the title, and have to go to work, so I can't dig it out. (after school, I will) I really liked that album, great playing, and spiritual lyrics, but I didn't remember it being Narada Michael Walden. the only song title I can think of is "Sky Boat"...

thanks

for the kind words Poda! And Spaz good to see you back in the "swing"....

Roger I wish I could help you more, hopefully Poda can. I have a friend who loves jazz and fusion, and he's turned me onto music I wish I had heard back when, like this Nova.

There are a lot of Nova groups around, I'm fairly certain that NMW is the guy here...but if I'm incorrect please let me know and I'll make sure I get my act together next time.

What's the name of that Nova album? I had an album of theirs called "Vimana" or something like that, on an old cassette that I taped in college off of my roommate's used vinyl - you can imagine the fine audiophile quality. But I lost even that tape

Exactly, Vimana. My friend has their record. He has not given the record to me to see who is what, etc. But he got it to CD so I could hear it. There will be some snap crackle and pops I think, but only a few.

He turned me on to Carl Hupp, Mark Varney, and Prism, so he's a good fusion source.

It took some doing, but I was able to look it up on the web as to the line up and song titles. I was surprised to see Percy Jones etc on the record.

The third tune has some nice vocals (something about a song for a "brother").

I'll double check the line-up before Sunday. Maybe I'll call him and ask, too....yeah that'll work.

haha I found Vimana (vinyl) on e-bay and put in a bid for it - so far I'm the high (and only) bidder. I also bid on 3 Stomu Yamashta records including both "Go" LPs. woohoo now that I can rip from vinyl...

here's what I've found so far:

Nova Reviews

From: "Fred Rosenkamp" <>
> Talking about the Italian seventies, does anyone know Nova?
Yes, I have 3 Nova (vinyl) albums: Vimana ('76), Wings of Love ('77) and Sun City ('78). The core line up of Nova was Corrado Rusticci (g), Renato Rosset (keys) and Elio D'Anna (saxes & flute). On the first album they had Phil Collins, Narada Michael Walden and Percy Jones guesting. Their later drummer was the late Ric Parnell of Atomic Rooster fame. Their debut album was very much Brand X and Mahavishnu Orchestra style jazz/rock. And later on their style developed (others would say degenerated) more towards funk/jazz/disco (comparable to Chic and Sister Sledge). By 1980 Corrado played in Narada's band on the album 'Victory'. After that I lost track of the Nova members. If you like Brand X, you'll probably like the first 2 Nova albums best. I don't know if the have been rereleased on CD.

From: "Grant Penton" <>
Vimana from '77 had a strong Brand X presence which helped create a richly melodic fusion LP. Highly recommended.

From: "Olav Eerland" <>
Nova made 4 albums: - Blink (75); Vimana (76); Wings of Love (77); Sun City (78)
I have Vimana and I hope to get Blink this week (on vinyl). I want to know if the other two albums are as good as Vimana. There is also a Nova that made one album in the late seventies, called Terranova. That (Dutch) band has got nothing to do witch the Italian one.

From: "Fred Rosenkamp" <>
I didn't know they had any albums out previous to Vimana. 'On the wings of love' is still pretty much in the same line of Vimana. I didn't play Sun City very often, so I guess there lies the break point for me. I wonder what 'Blink' sounds like.

Jim and Rick both correct

Nova did 2 lps to my knowledge i own both. the first Vimana was w/Walden and excellent piece from start to finish...Jim i'm astounded you found it on ebay! the second lp (Wings of Love) not as polished but i'm still glad i bought it. most of the musicians seemed to have just dissappeared after this lp....would have expected them to turn up on other pieces or projects but no luck.

phil collins and percy jones also have a credit on Vimana....i hadn't noticed that till i pulled it up at ALLmusic.com—though some of the band memebers are mixed up if you just put in Nova as a group. go by lp title to see real group line up. Walden is an awesome drummer!but now i'm not sure it's not Phil on the intro Thru the Silence.

still must check through my lps i know i have both i loved this lp.

"driftwood...sand scorched and beaten by the countless...
storms around us rage...so much goes on...in our silence"

liked the lyrics too

Yess!

Poda, not only did I find it on e-bay, I won the auction - for $2.99! As soon as I receive it, I'm ripping it and adding it to the station - that was a favorite in college. I've been searching for it ever since I lost that tape...

(I didn't win the Stomu Yamashta auction, but found both Go! albums on one CD and have a bid in on that - fingers crossed)
