Japanese IQ test (a fun little diversion...)

The following was posted on the Marillion web site forum and it's kind of fun.

Follow this URL:

http://freeweb.siol.net/danej/riverIQGame.swf

The rules are in Japanese. Unless you can read Japanese, follow the rules below:

First: Click on the blue circle to start the test.

The idea of the test is to get everyone across the river but a few stipulations follow:

There are 8 people to cross: Mom, Dad, 2 daughters, 2 sons, a thief and a policeman.

1. Only 2 persons on the raft at a time.

2. The father can not stay with any of the daughters without the mother being present.
You will know if you've violated this rule by a graphic that will appear.

3. The mother can not stay with any of the sons without the father being present.
Again, you will know if you've violated this rule by a graphic that will appear.

4. The thief (striped shirt) can not stay with any family member if the Policeman is not present.
Yet again, you will know if you've violated this rule by a graphic that will appear.

5. Only the Father, the Mother and the Policeman know how to operate the raft.

To move the people click on them.
To move the raft click on the pole on the opposite side of the river.

HINT: the solution is 17 moves... have fun!

Don't post the solution here if you get it.

I've gotten it - didn't count if it took 17 but that sounds about right. I like the "two handed salute" or whatever the hell that is they all do when you win.

OK, I re-did it and counted and it was exactly 17 moves. Good one...

What happens if you leave the Wolf and the Rabbit together? And who will eat the cabbage?

Would YOU trust Vax to be left alone on the far bank without her mother being along to keep them from each others' throats?

Just a thought.

Roger -Dot- Lee, can't come up with a wiseacre followup that doesn't sound like a bad 1940s era joke.

Wink all that glitters is not gold

Hello,
Nice problem but text iswrtitten in chinese not in japanese;
some rather old fashioned /archaic ideograms ( those made with a lot of strokes) make me think[ i'm not a specialist] the text is from Taiwan/Hong Kong/Singapore and not from the popular republic of China. Today,Taiwan (and most of chinese people of the diaspora) still uses old way of writing ideograms and never had share the simplified ones[ less strokes/signs] used since 1949 by the PRC.

Japanese borrowed Chinese signs( known as Kanji in Japan) from the 7th century together with buddhist texts. Now,modern japanses uses around 1900 different kanjis ( around 4000 thousands before WWII)
hint : modern japaneses texts are full of smal signs called kanas ( two syllabaries systems[around fifty syllabes/system] named hiragana and /or katakana). HIRAGANA are used to adapt kanjis to the japanese grammatical system ( fully different and far more complex than the chinese one);KATAKANA are mainly used to translate words borrowed from foreign language ( english, french , portuguese, ..) and onomatopeas ( common in manga-type comics)

regards, sayonara
