Queen w/Paul Rodgers

Saw Queen with Paul Rodgers on lead vocals Saturday night. I don't have time to do a full on concert review, but I will say that I enjoyed it, and they're worth seeing if you like Queen. What was well done is that Paul recognizes that he's not Freddie Mercury, and doesn't try to be him - he just sings in his own style. Roger Taylor and Brian May add a fair amount of vocals, and I guess playing in the same band as Freddie wore off - they both sound a bit like him. Song selection was mostly what you'd guess, but a few old Queen and Bad Company songs thrown in mixed it up nicely. They had 3 supporting musicians (bass, guitar, keys) which filled out the sound. Brian May and Roger Taylor (two of the most underrated musicians in rock, IMHO) were in fine form, and obviously were enjoying the show, and not just going through the motions.

Worth attending if you're a fan...

Saw this lot play Hyde Park last year and really did enjoy it for the same reasons as Jim.

Go and see them if you get the chance. It's an entertaining night out.

Re: Queen w/Paul Rodgers

One of the things I loved about Queen was the contrasting musical styles and vocals of Roger, Freddie, and Brian. I'm a bit surprised they sounded like Freddie, each is an excellent musician in their own right. That's what is missing in my mind with this pairing. Rodgers and Queen are an odd odd mix.

I'm not a purist, but I just can't get into "Queen with Paul Rodgers". When he joined up with Jimmy Page, it was called the Firm. In concert they played mostly their songs, but a few Zep and Bad Co songs. But to my knowledge, Queen have no songs together with Paul Rodgers. I can't imagine hearing Paul Rodgers singing "Bohemian Rhapsody" or "Tie Your Mother Down" or Queen playing "Feel Like Making Love". It feels like a bar cover band.

Again, I'm all for musicians trying different things. But really try something different.

However, I'm glad both of you liked it - I had the chance to see them and passed...hopefully it's my loss.

I'm still trying to get over Todd Rundgren with the Cars...

Heh, I was totally going to chime in with something about The New Cars, but really, Rundgren is a guitarist, not a singer.

Todd can sing...actually he can do anything. While the early Cars is great pop, it's not really complicated...I just found it an odd pairing. Probably Todd wants to do something different (like his tour with Joe Jackson). He's certainly earned it.

Re: Queen w/Paul Rodgers

I saw Rundgren a few years back, when his album, Nearly Human came out. great show! somebody famous on keys, too, like Fee Waybill. (does that sound right?) awesome horn section, and girl singers, and the whole caboodle. cool.

oh yeah. he can sing.

Totally off thread here but I'm sorry Spaz, Todd R is a GREAT singer. Jam, our respective spouses and I saw him a while back and we were amazed at how well he has kept that AMAZING voice.

Sure he's a brilliant guitar player (solo in "I saw the light" for example) but I will always remember him for the voice.

Now who would have gotten a thread off of track!

I own one Todd record, can you believe that (Back to the Bars)? And XTC's "Skylarking", which he produced....
