Show 116 - "A Pocketful of Super Songs"!
Show 116 - Sunday Feb 4, 8-11 PM EST and Monday Feb 5, 1-4 PM EST
"A Pocketful of Super Songs" Last year for the Super Bowl I was able to dig up some Pittsburgh and Seattle songs. This year I'm just going all over the damn place. The common thread is a band that a friend of mine turned me on to called "Pocket Orchestra". They're considered RIO, but have amazing instrumental passages. I will play six of their songs, but not together. I'll denote them by typing (PO). They have two releases, 1983's "Pocket Orchestra Tape" and 1978's "Knebnagauje Tape". I'm going to also play some unusual music, and some harder stuff. Demanding listening! T - from "Voices" Party Piece 5:34 Septic 6:24 Second Thoughts 6:24 T is for Thomas Thielen, a German artist. Another from the many-CD set that our own beloved Rogor Mortis burned for me while I was in the UK last fall. I had to go all the way the the Ubekistan progressive rock pages (I am not kidding) to research Mr. Thielen! (PO) Imam Bialdi 6:24 (wow three in a row with the same running time...that and a quarter will get me a seat on the bus!) Pocketful - from "Sparkling" Deep Down Inside 4:34 Every Door 5:37 Behind Thoughts - Part 1 5:20 Another Mortis donation...."Pocket" as in the Quarterback in the pocket..yes, it fits the theme well. (PO) R.V. 7:02 Iron Maiden - from "Dance of Death" Dance of Death 8:36 Paschendale 8:27 Journeyman 7:07 No More Lies 7:21 Four high-quality cuts from a 2002 album that slipped through the cracks. "Journeyman" is a rare feat - acoustic, subdued Maiden. As usual, nice instrumental passages throughout. (PO) Regiments 14:55 Mind's Eye - A Rabbit In The Hat 6:12 The Nacaza Lines 6:31 Flight Of The Anunnaki 3:20 Admittedly not my favorite band, I've seen their vendor tables a lot at festivals. These are three nice songs, though, worth a listen. The last of Mortis's music....until Rosfest lol... (PO) Letters 13:50 Avenged Sevenfold - from "City of Evil" Seize the Day 5:33 Strength of the World 9:15 Yeah, you read it right...usually most of their music is too heavy and growling for me. But the first song is reminiscent of old Queen, and the second is classic heavy metal, with long riffs and many prog elements. Worth one play, I think you may be surprised. (PO) Grandma Coming Down The Hall With A Hatchet 5:32 Fish - from "Vigil In A Wilderness of Mirrors" Family Business 5:14 Cliche 7:01 This recently made it onto the Moon playlist, and I coincidentally had purchased it the same week. A fine record, "Cliche" is dedicated to well...the person knows. Was taken aback, because when I first heard the song (on the way home from work), the very same hour Mailotron had requested it on the Moon. Of course he knew the song long ago...dopey me just finally heard it. Coincidences are freaky... (PO) Bagon 16:50 The sixth Pocket Orchestra song, to close out the show. I've been catching up on some classic rock and prog of late, and it's tempting to play some. But the playlist is set for a while, so you'll just have to suffer through some newer great prog until April.....then we release the XTC, Porcupine Tree, and Rosfest shows. And then.....well let's get there first! |
