Show 7 - Mixed Bag
No themes this week, nothing to look at, move along.......
Just some random picks: 1) Phil Manzaera - Listen Now - Listen Now One of three songs on this week's show that are not on the Moon playlist. What a great CD. 2) Blezgi Zatsaz - Azzivulla's Suite - The Tide Turns Every song I have heard by this band I like a lot. Don't know a thing about them, maybe Magoo (who I know digs this) or others can help me out. A nice long song ![]() 3) ELO - Fire On High Saw this while perusing the files one day and thought, I haven't heard this since CBS Sports stopped playing it. 4) Genesis - Stagnation - Trespass I LOVE THIS SONG. 5) Dixie Dregs - Dig the Ditch - Freefall I'm big on contrast. This one puts us back on the upswing. 6) Enchant - East of Eden - A Blueprint of the World Te first and most prog of their catalogue. Enchant - The San Francisco treat! 7) Ars Nova - the 42 Gods - The Book of the Dead One of their drums might weigh more than their combined weight. Such power from nice young ladies. (here is where I mention a National Health tune on my voiceover, but I had to cut it due to time....maybe another show) 8) Alan Parsons Project - Turn Of A Friendly Card (title cut) Haven't heard this or the Tales record in 20 years maybe. 9) Jeff Beck - Star Cycle - There and Back Beck and Jan Hammer rock out. 10) Anekdoten - From Within - From Within A hypnotic number, basic but full of force. 11) Ian Anderson - The Secret Launguage of Birds (same) If I had a hero, he'd be the one. 12) Camel - Drafted/Docks/Beached - Nude Three humps on this Camel! 13) ELP - Hallowed Be Thy Name - Works Vol. 1 The Lake/Sinfield connection scores a lyrical winner. 14) Discipline - Between Me And The End - Live...Into The Dream Me and maybe 40 others witnessed Matthew Parmenter pulling this one out of his hat at the great Orion studio. The band was taking five while he just put all of his energy into it. I still get goose bumps hearing this. There's a great version on his solo record, very haunting. Hope this is what we will hear at Nearfest from him. 15) The Tubes - Up From The Deep - Haloes - The Tubes Vaxman sent this to me to play on the Tweeners show. Couldn't get it in last week and didn't want to wait, a cool tune. Now to get some the Rogor Mortis songs worked in.... 16) Wyzards - Phantoms/Lizards - The Final Catastrophe This is from a Sensory (out of Vorhees NJ) sampler I was given several years back. This one's a hard one to explain - almost 15 minutes, it has many twists and turns, but is basically a rock song with bits of prog thrown in.....it rocks while throwing in a sense of humor and fine musicianship. 17) ABWH - Brother of Mine - ABWH I consider this a Yes record.....and this is one of my favorite tunes. I'm a huge Squire fan, but he's not missed here (the ubiquitous Tony Levin of course). Wakeman and Howe shine! 18) Wilding & Bonus - Pleasure Signals (full CD) Race For Space G. Storm Oddysey Earth Hymn Rampage Theme From Alma Son of Alma Initiation Into The Nagual Ranchtown Tango Danny Wilding (Flutes) and Pete Bonus (Guitar) team up with their Brand X buddies Goodsall, Lumley, Collins, Pert, Giblin and a fine guest list of Bayete, Phil Chen, Mike Shrieve and others to put out a really cool CD. It's right in the middle of the great Brand X period (1978) and John Giblin is a monster, especially on "Rampage". The cover is easily the best concept - tiny Wilding and Bonus guys standing on naked women communicating by semaphore. If you can ever check out the out of print album, the detail is incredible. It says they're photos, but I'm not an artist and I can't tell how its put it together. Hey I'm a results-oriented guy! Have fun! |
