Interzone - April 5, 2005: ECM Records I
Hellooooo,
This week on Interzone I’ll be doing the first of many shows to come on music from the German label ECM. The ECM label was started in 1969 by Manfred Eichler, who was interested in creating a label devoted to contemporary music, jazz and improvisation. Eichler’s vision was to bring new and contemporary ideas to classic music traditions while also producing records of distinct production quality. The end result is a diverse catalog of music in the jazz, jazz-rock, avant-garde, new age, and contemporary music veins. ECM, which stands for ‘Editions of Contemporary Music’ is still around today and has released about 900 records over the last 35 years with such notable artists John Abercrombie, Jan Garbarek, Keith Jarrett, and Terje Rypdal spending the majority of their long recording careers devoted to this label. ECM is perfect for a show like Interzone as you’ll discover that the music does not typify your common jazz, venturing into the gray space between progressive rock and jazz. Hope you enjoy... - Cozy PS - Playlist to come.
