Right. I was going to mention that. Honest!

Roger -Dot- Lee, wasn't miles away at the time, it was my evil twin, they didn't need those sheep anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

It DOES Bite!!!!!!!!

Excellent add to the playlist.

I have all their albums and think they are superb.

I know a Las Vegas Goddess who will be delighted at this addition too.

btw. I get the impression that Dr Dot is DJing at the moment as a lot of the new adds are playing as I type and catch up on old posts.

It's good to be back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Goddess in Vegas? Has poda moved down here?

Keith and I agree on one thing...It Bites is superb. I've heard a lot of flack about them...that they were too commercial in their approach, but it doesn't matter to me. What Francis Dunnery brought in energy to that group, even in the middle of his drunken daze, is amazing. Two guitarists who really get me...Dunnery is one of them.

Not prog related, but check out his solo album "Man".

Rick, you in particular would prob like that one.

If she has then that's two goddesses in one town. Greedy old Vegas!!!!!

I thought we agreed on a lot of things mossy. But you're right. Francis is an amazing person.

btw. Just ordered Man from amazon on your recommendation mossy. I'm sure it will be amazing. What about his other solo work? Is that worth investigating too?

I thought you had "Man", keith. I'm sure you'll like it. In fact, I'll eat my hat if you don't.

Other recommendations...

His first when he broke from It Bites, "Welcome to the Wild Country"

"One Night in Sauchiehall Street", mostly acoustic set with his friend Ashley Reakes.

"Hometown"

You can get all of those on his site www.francisdunnery.com

ps: "Man" is his most brilliant to date, imho.

Biting

I picked up that It Bites collection in Japan for $9 - based on it, I may pick up more of their stuff. Some of it is uncomfortably close to middle o fthe road rock, but most of it I liked quite a lot. Any feedback on which of their original albums are most or least prog would be appreciated...

Oh, I doubt it'll get added. That's why I put the frown and the grin, because I know better. It's a 20+ guitar angst workout. It's got sections and movements, but it's pretty heavy and loud and long, so it might be a little extreme for the AM sound. The sticker on the disc says "Two Parts Serenity and One Part Death Metal." I hope that gives all of us an idea of what it sounds like. If I were ProgDirSpaz, I'd add it, but I am not. So, I'll lobby for it, but I'm not putting money on it. I looked over the list and noticed the one song Jim didn't add is "Stereodee," which I KNEW he'd not add. I, yes even I, the broad-definition-of-prog-guy, wouldn't add that one. That'd scare small animals.

Now that doesn't mean "Stereodee" and "My Father My King" won't get some BRock airplay

it bites

Jim, I don't think there's any one album more prog than another. I think you made a great choice in the "Best of- Calling all the Heroes"cd.

The only song missing from the selection, and not sure why as it's a superb song, is Ice Melts into Water.

The studio version of that song can be found on "Eat me in St. Louis" and the live version on "Thank You and Good Night" (a great album but a lot of the songs are covered on the "Best Of", albeit in studio version)

Keith, Rick...would you agree with my assessment of less prog/more prog?

btw, theres an archival video clip of the band doing "Underneath Your Pillow" on their website.

Another moon worthy song is "Once around the World" off the same named album.

They released the three early albums and then the live album (all songs off the earlier albums) and then the "best of". Hard not to have some redundancy somewhere.

There's a fairly recent release as well..."Live in Montreux", from older past performance.

Five of the ten songs on Montreux are already on the "Best of" but it does include "Once Around the World" as a bonus track.

Anyway, that said, my picks would be "Once Around the World" the album, and "Thank you and Good Night" for the live version on Ice Melts Into Water.

You can actually have a listen to "Once Around the World", the song, as an audio clip in the downloads section of their site. www.itbites.com

It Bites.......

For me their second album is the best. Not to say that the others are any less worthy but if I had to pick one for the Moon it would be "Once around the World".

It is certainly their most progressive. With Steve Hillage co-producing a few of the tracks, it's clear that IB had prog in mind for this album. The album opens with the explosive, albeit rather poppy 'Midnight' and is followed up with 'Kiss like Judas'; the hit single from OATW. With the pop out of the way the band plough into 'Yellow Christian' the first of three conceptual songs on the album. 'YC' is awash with Tony Banks style keyboards, and some quirky Yes-ish vocals, not to mention a few odd time signatures for good prog measure. This is not to say that this album is a rip off of other artists. IB always had their own style and sound, even though their three studio albums were all very different. 'Old man and the angel' was the second single from this album. As a single it failed miserably, but thats hardly surprising as it's a great song!! The CD unlike the vinyl has the full 9 minute version of OMATA, which in my view is the one of the best tracks on the album. The epic is the title track. A thirteen minute collage of English prog eccentricity, woven together by excellent musicianship. It Bites were a sadly underated prog act in the 80's. Once described as 'Like Marillion with sex. A far more pallatable concept than sex WITH Marillion'.

Message for Progdirjim..........

Jim,

I had a little bit of luck and won a couple of quid on a bet.

I've arranged for the It Bites album "Once Around the World" and Khan's "Space Shanty" to wing their way to you. Not sure how long they'll take but they will get there eventually.
