Winamp

I've used WinAmp for ages but I wasn't able to listen to the 128 stream as it would start to buffer every 30 seconds or so. However, as soon as I upgraded to the latest and newest version of WinAmp this stopped and I've been listening at 128 ever since.

Does anyone have any idea why this should be? Just curious.

Often times upgades of a significant nature will do some diddling with the internals as well as the oooh factor portions of the application. it's likely that one of th bugs was that it was taking too long to decode the 128k stream and was overrunning the buffer.

Just a WAG, mind, but it makes sense...

Welll.....

I know a huge portion of our 128k audience, including myself, listened with Winamp for years. I know it worked just fine. There are tons of shoutcast stations out there at that bitrate and higher, so I'm sure the program itself was fine in this regard.

But perhaps that particular installation on your machine wasn't right, and the upgrade "reinstalled" it, and fixed whatever local problem you were having.

That would be my best guess.

I am a huge Winamp fan. If it wasn't for Winamp and Nullsoft, there would be no Aural Moon. Heck, there probably wouldn't be internet radio stations at all! Aural Moon broadcasted using Winamp for years, and we were shoutcasting when the whole idea was in its infancy. We owe thema huge thanks.

There's also a great story about the history of Audion for the Mac, which was recently retired.

And that's the other half of the equasion. Since I don't know the internal workings of WinAMP (being a Mac type), I'm not sure what was done. But Avian's right -- it may well have been (and quite likely was) a buffering issue with winamp on your personal setup.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not dogging WinAMP in any way. From what I understand, it's a fine product, and in fact it was the only way I could reliably connect to the Moon during a significant portion of my tenure at HP (for some reason, iTunes for the PC wouldn't connect to the 128k streams at all).

It's not my personal favorite, but I'm not saying, in any way, that it's a bad product. My personal bugaboo with it is that AOL (otherwise known as the 900 lb gorilla) took it, like they took Netscape, CNN, and everything else they've polluted, and completely destroyed it.

And it's a fine product, in spite of AOL's best efforts. The independent Nullsoft was likely a fine company that generated an obviously fine product. The Nullsoft that remained after the 900 lb gorilla sat on it...well, I'm sure you see my point.

There's also a great story about the history of Audion for the Mac, which was recently retired.

I'll have to check that out. I've never heard of Audion. My first introduction to streaming audio (and by extension, Aural Moon) after spinner.com killed off their progressive stream was iTunes on the Mac.

Indeed. Here, again, I restate that I hope that the source gets 'accidentally' leaked to the public. That would keep it alive at the very least.
