Neal Schon!!!

Awesome!

In my not so humble opinion, Neal Schon is probably the single most underrated nad under-appreciated guitarist there is. Always in the shadow of the voice that is Steve Perry, people forget that at fifteen years old he had the task of choosing between joining Santana or Derek and the Dominoes.

Canvas, you must really be on a Schon kick, because last week you played "Rubicon." I was excited to see that come up. Not much after Perry joined is progressive, but a few tracks from Frontiers make the cut in my opinion. It was their most experimental album. I think the tracks "Frontiers," "Troubled Child," and "Back Talk" all pass under the prog-limbo-stick. I'd like to see those played someday. I'm also glad to see some material from Dream After Dream. "Destiny" is a good choice. Journey will always be one of my favs.

Oh, and props to the King's X.

Neal Schon

Yesspaz,

Thanks for noticing! Schon is one of my favorite players and always has been. I think the early Journey stuff is amazing and I especially love "Dream After Dream". I'm always suprised at how many people have never heard about this album. I'll play those tracks you mentioned above at some point. I think I've found at least a couple tracks from most of the Journey albums to play. Even from the new EP called "Red 13". Its not the best Journey, but Schon is smokin' on this thing. Its new and its very interesting. I'll get some of that on future shows as well.

Thanks for listening Yesspaz!!!!!

Much appreciated!!!

Red 13

The only thing I like about Red 13 is the first song. I'd forgotten about it, but it's progressive too. The rest of the ep stinks, in my opinion. I don't like Deen Castronova or whatever his name is. He's not half the drummer Steve Smith was, or one tenth the drummer Ansley Dunbar was.

I agree with you about Steve Smith and Ansley Dunbar being amazing drummers. Speaking of Dunbar, some of the most incredible drumming on a Journey tune would have to be from the song called Kohoutek from Journey's first album. Check out the single kick drum stuff when the pace picks up a minute or two into the tune. I've always been blown away by this display of single kick speed and power. It makes the calf on my right leg hurt whenever I hear it.

Yeah, I had to swear on my head to my drummer friend Tony that it was only one kick pedal. He said that there was no way it was one, but it had to be two. I showed him the Time3 write-up and he was amazed. But Dunbar's Journey highlight to me is on Cookie Duster. Dang.

Ansley Dunbar

Did you know that Ansley Dunbar played on Jesus Christ Superstar? Thats another prog masterpiece that alot of people don't consider prog. Cookie Duster is an awesome tune. I just decided to feature Ansley Dunbar on a future CPH "In Focus", so keep your eyes and ears peeled for that.
